Photoshop Fun

Postby Jayell » Mon May 16, 2011 2:08 pm

For me it's helpful when folks display their work to describe what they did, how they did it, and what they used.
So in the hopes that might help helpful to someone else, or those considering switching to Photoshop, I thought I'd use this thread over the next few days to display some projects I've made recently in Photoshop, describing some of the details and where I got the tutorial for it (when that applies). I'm using Photoshop-CS5.

This first one I posted in another thread recently, but thought I'd start with it.

I started with these 3 photos:
photos.JPG

I ended up with this.
j-d-blending.jpg

There's 5 layers total, including the frame which I made; 2 masks; a hue-saturation layer was place on top to play with the overall color tones.
The majority of the work came from playing with the blending mode placed on the cloud layer, and getting the masks just right.
The tutorial came from Lynda.com's Photoshop CS5-Creative Compositing Tutorial. Amazing tutorial!
The people photos were taken 10 years apart.

The next photo was made up of two photos (taken ~mid 1990s and 2005) and 5 graphics I just grabbed off the Internet.

tennis-court.jpg

And ended up with this:

tennis-game.jpg

This has a total of 11 layers. No special effects, masks, or blending, other than adding some noise to a green layer to create the court surface.
The major obstacle was how to deal with the photos of both the guys that were cut off at the knees. Walls to the rescue.
This was made to honor my Dad (seriously avid tennis guy) on the 2-year anniv of his passing in March. I just put his photo on the page .. then started adding as I thought of things, to reflect the silly relationship we had.

Thanks Jayell for sharing the how to's. There are many different ways to create in PS and it is interesting to see how someone did things. :)

This is one of my favorites, and I'm really pleased with the way it came out.
It started with this one puny photo :-D

hedgehog.jpg

And ended up with this.

curved-photo-grid.jpg

This is made up of 7 layers (with various bevels, drop shadows, & strokes), and 2 masks.
The hardest part here was forming & getting the squares of the photo grid properly aligned, getting the curved shape just right, applying the reflection with appropriate gradient, and getting it all to line up just right.

The tutorial for this was included in my paid yearly subscription to Scrapper’s Guide.

I love this one for it's simplicity.

Started with this pin:

pin-orig.jpg

And ended up with this:

pin.jpg

Other than throwing on a background, this is nothing but shadows, dodge & burn.
Can't you just see that pin sticking through the background? :-D
I believe this also came from a paid Scrapper's Guide tutorial.

I've done a few Photo Collages blending the photos together. Your stuff looks great Jayell :)
Here are a couple of tutorials that I found useful for doing this kind of work, maybe you or someone else will get something out of them too.

Looks like some more fun stuff, Chuck. Thanks! I like the Lynda tutorials, but I really like doing these small projects, where after a relatively short lesson, you have a completed project.

Here's one more .. that I posted in another thread when I was struggling with it.

Starting with picture a friend of mine took up in Buchart Gardens in Vancouver

photos.jpg

And the final product

picture-book.jpg

This one is interesting because there's a couple different ways to accomplish this.
I did it (following a Lynda.com tutorial..I think) by creating a selection (the book shape), then 'pasting into it.' Then what made me crazy is that I wanted the fold on the back of the book to show thru .. so I experimented with blend modes, but it wouldn't work .. until I de-saturated the blue out of the book. After struggling with that for awhile, I realized I could have created the book binding by simply using a little dodge & burn, precluding the need for blending.

I thought I recognized that garden. I saw it while on a trip to Victoria on Vancouver Island some years ago. I'd like to go back some day.

OK .. here's one more.

Started with this background from VladStudio (plus a gold brad graphic)

calm.jpg

.. and ended up with this

calm-folded-edge.jpg

Another Scrapper's Guide tutorial. I love these simple, but amazing looking projects. Nothing here other than a little cut, flip .. and a few shadows, dodge, burn, & smudge.
