Here is a good book on PS CS5, the Visual Quickstart Guide Photoshop CS5 by Elaine Weinmann & Peter Lourekas. I was looking for a good reference book that you could jump right to a tool or how to and this one has been easy & helpful. Lots of illustrations and step by step. I did watch tuts at Lynda last fall, but I like to have a hard copy reference book too.

Thanks, Cheryl. I've taken 6 or 7 Lynda Photoshop tutorials, but I agree it's nice to have a reference when you want to look up something specific.

The 7 points is basically a way of working through Photoshop in a consistent way and applying tools in a logical sequence. You can perhaps find that book in a local bookshop so that you can 'have a browse'. As for tuts there is this site but I haven't used any of the training material there.

I have only used Lynda for PS training - PS Essentials; PS Selections in Depth; PS Portrait Retouching; PS Creative Compositing and PS One-on-One.

Just wanted to follow up on this, Bob. After looking at several Photoshop books I purchased "How to Cheat in Photoshop CS5." I'm really thrilled with it. For anyone who might be interested ..
1. The entire book is made up of 1 page lessons, grouped by subject, so it's easy to skip around to the items that interest you.
2. All the photos they use in the lessons are also on the enclosed DVD, so you can follow the book lesson literally.
3. Every 2 or 3 lessons also includes that same lesson in video on the DVD, which is great for those tricky effects.

The book assumes you know how to get around in Photoshop somewhat, but does start with some pretty basic stuff to get you rolling. I'd highly recommend this book for folks wanting to take Photoshop to the next level, by learning lots of special effects.

That's why I posted these. I get so much inspiration looking at what others have done. Sometimes it may even be something totally unrelated that was triggered by looking at someone's work.

I took a little Photoshop tutorial today, and love the results I got .. so thought I'd share.

I started out with just a photo and a piece of background paper.

.. and with a little smoke and mirrors (an a lot of work!), I ended up with this:
(good things I follow directions well, cause I couldn't begin to do this on my own).

Thanks, Cheryl. If you mean the green border around the photo .. I just grabbed a copy of the background paper, changed it to green, and slipped it behind the photo. Did I understand your question correctly?
