Edit Menu in CS5

Postby momoffduty » Wed Nov 03, 2010 10:37 am

I would like to change the color of the flower petals from red to fall colors. I've tried a few things and no luck. Here is the PrEl3 menu that I will use in Encore (and changing the photo):

Can you create a mask layer in photoshop that you can make color adjustments to?
I'm not really great at the exact wording or Photoshop language but it seems you could just extract a layer with just the petals and colorize that any way you would want to.

So you've opened the PSD in Photoshop and you're editing the background layer, right, Cheryl?

You've tried using the Quick Selection or Magic Wand tools to select the rose petals so that you can adjust their color without affecting the rest of the picture, right?

Once you've selected them and done a copy/paste (Ctrl+c, then Ctrl+v) to duplicate them on a new layer, you should be able to use the Hue/Saturation tool to change their colors.

If that doesn't work, you can just fill them (on this new layer we've created) with an autumn color, then use one of the layer Blending Modes (overlay, for instance) to tint the color on the original layer.

What have you tried, Cheryl? It might be easier to advise you if we knew what's already not worked.

I tried the mask route thinking I could just change the Hue & Saturation maybe. I tried the Overlay layer style which didn't look natural. The problem is that there are other layers in the folder and I am new to PS. I did watch the tuts at Lynda. What I need is a step by step.

Steve, we posted at the same time. I tried those 2 ways, but got lost. Ctrl + select the layer and then do I add a Hue & Saturation layer? If not, after I Ctrl + Select what then?

Are the petals a layer of their own already?
If so you should just need to add an adjustment layer of a solid color above the petals.
Changing the color of that layer should change the colors of the petals.
Might help if you made the petals white to start with if that is possible.

Which menu template is this, Cheryl? I'll take a pass at creating a background layer for you if you'd like.

I've looked in the V3 DVD Templates, Wedding, Romance, and only have a standard version.
Are you sure there is a widescreen version of this template or am I looking in the wrong place?

The name is Romantic not romance. Sorry. The petals are on their own layer. I just tried out Steve's suggestion of making a copy and altering that copy via Image>Hue & Saturation.

What I was trying before was to add an adjustment layer of Hue & Saturation which then changed all of the layers below in that folder.

If I wanted to use an adjustment layer, would a clipping mask change only that layer and not the others?

Okay, Cheryl, pick up the file by clicking here:
http://chuckengels.com/muvipix/romantic_bg.psd

You can open it up and Photoshop and tweak the colors if you want.

Then just drag it or copy it to the menu template PSD file, making sure it sits right above the layer set called Foreground.

Does that give you what you need?

Got it tweaked, thanks Steve for your help. I watched the tuts on CS5 the past month and too much to retain. Went back today and watched again the layer adjustments tut. Things are starting to sink in. If I copy a layer and use image>adj>hue then that layer is permanently altered and that is why to make a copy. And if I choose an adj. layer mask the layer isn't permanently altered, but if there are layers below they will be effected so making it a clipping mask will only alter one layer. And then you have the whole group thing and pass thru mode vs normal, etc.

Not sure what I tried the first few times, but thanks for pointing the way.
