Questions re PSE7 v PS CS5 Editing Options

Postby George Tyndall » Sat Aug 28, 2010 8:06 am

Does opening a JPEG file in the PSE7 Organizer with Quick Fix instead of Full Edit have the same effect as opening a JPEG file in Adobe CS5 Bridge with Ctrl-R instead of Ctrl-O?

In other words, does PSE7 also offer Camera Raw processing but with a different name?

George,

1 -- PSE 7 does offer a limited set of functions of Adobe Camera Raw processing.

2 -- The Quick Fix from the Organizer is NOT the same as Camera Raw : in fact in a way I would view them as opposites. Quick Fix is an easy and limited set of fixes. Camera Raw is an advanced set of corrections (even when it is limited in PS Elements).

3 -- JPEGs can be processed under PSE 7 Camera Raw (in addition to the RAW camera formats for which Camera RAW was designed). I have done color curve corrections on a JPEG from PSE, but I would need to go back and check exactly how it is activated from PSE.

The above are my perspectives based on experience with PS Elements. I suspect that the invocation of Adobe Camera RAW from Bridge CS5 will provide more of the functions within Camera RAW, but I don't know how beneficial the additional functions would be for jpeg format and can't speak from personal experience on that point.

George,
as far as I know, you can only open a .jpeg file from the editor in PSE7. You do that by going to >file > open as and selecting > Camera raw from the drop down list.

Also, George, I would like to point out the PET site to you. You have to subscribe to have full access to their content, but it will be the best $49/year you have spent. This are the same people, who are running the NAPP site. Any thing I know about PSE I have learned from that site. The user magazine, you get with the subscription, is also excellent. They have hundreds of video and written tutorials and the best thing - you can download them to your computer. They also offer cheap online classes.

Just a few added comments.

Quick fix is destructive, it makes permanent changes to the file when you save. Camera Raw is non-destructive, the changes are stored as metadata tags in the jpeg file. The original image isn't touched. You can always go back into camera raw and change them whenever you wan't. You can pass it as a smart object to the editor and make changes from there as well.

Bridge will display an updated thumbnail reflecting the camera raw adjustments contained in the file. I don't know whether Organizer will do that. Windows Explorer won't, it will show the original thumbnail. Likewise, if you want to use the modified jpeg in another application that doesn't handle jpeg as raw you'll need to save a copy as a regular jpeg from the editor.

Thanks for sharing that information. I sometimes work at locations with very slow internet connections, which makes going online to review a tutorial cumbersome if not impossible, so the ability to download them is very appealing.

I was just now reviewing a course about PSE7 on lynda.com (which I learned about from the muvipix Home page), and according to the author, if one has RAW files to edit, then PSE7 will open them with a RAW editor that appears only if one's files are actually RAW. (I'm signed up for only 30 days, so I'm watching as much as I can. Unlike the site you mentioned -- which I've aleady joined -- and unlike muvipix, lynda.com does not allow downloading of the courses.)

Thanks again for sharing that information.

Hi George,
I'm glad you like the site, you won't regret spending the money to join. There is a series of tutorials on using the raw format editor in PSE by Matt Kloskowski . I never shoot in raw mode, but I always try the raw editor first on a jpeg file, if the picture has some kind of problem.

Here is one of them and there are many more: http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/me ... a-raw-101/

g, I tried Matt's method, but I was not successful with PSE, however, if I open a JPEG file with Adobe CS5 Bridge, then all I need do is right-click it and choose Camera Raw to have access to the controls for Camera Raw processing. Do you know what version of PSE is using in the movie?

George, that tutorial is from 2007, so it has to be PSE5 or 6. But there are newer once, do a search. Unfortunately, there is no quick way of opening a jpeg file in PSE. It can only be done from the editor as I described in my earlier post.

I signed up for 2 years, and I just received two issues of the magazine plus 2 DVDs.

DVD Vol. 3 covers all the newsletters from 2008 and DVD Vol. 4 is packed with tutorials. I'll be trying some of these out during my upcoming week's vacation.

Thanks for bringing this material to my attention.

Isn't that great! You can also download all of the past issues of the news letter starting with the 1st. issue in 2004 as a pdf. Have a fun vacation, but don't spend it all on the computer. :-D
