Alternative to Neat Image

Postby RJ Johnston » Tue Aug 07, 2012 12:02 am

I was reading an eBook by Sascha Steinhoff called Scanning Negatives and Slides in which the Noise Ninja plug-in for Photoshop was briefly discussed as an alternative to other noise removal plug-ins. I downloaded the trial and tried it out on a few photos. It does a nice job. I'm considering purchasing a license. There's a 32-bit and 64-bit version. There's one for Windows and one for MAC.

Three of the main features I like:
1) You can define multiple sample areas, by dragging a rectangle around each.
2) There's a brush to mask areas you don't want affected.
3) It seems to do a better job of maintaining texture than Neat Image.

The trial version places a grid on the image, which can easily be content-aware filled in Photoshop.

I have repeatedly tried to make use of the free version of Neat Image for Photoshop and was never happy with the results. Maybe I'm not using it with the right settings. I find, if I use Photoshop's Dust and Scratches filter I get most of the time good results, particularly on scanned images. I do a lot of photo restorations on photos with really bad water and mold damage. Sometimes there is no one tool fix all approach and I do selections on parts of the photo and apply different filters like Surface Blur, Gaussian Blur etc. It is more work, but I don't have to spend the extra money for expensive Plug-ins. But then, I have a lot of patience ::C

Neat Image and Noise Ninja aren't for dust and scratches, which may be why you weren't happy with the results. They are for luminance and chroma noise such as when you shoot in low light. I get the noise, too, in blue sky.

Do you have the free Polaroid Dust and Scratch removal plug-in and standalone version? That has an option for dark or light dust. The standalone version is more complicated. It's no longer on Polaroid's web site. But I found an archived copy here:

A calendar is displayed with circles around the dates that you can click to start the download.

Somewhere there is one for a MAC:

You are not limited to scratch removal, you can also try the Reduce Noise filter under the Noise category. Could you provide a sample image to try?

I've tried several times to upload an image, but there is a server error. I'll try again later.

Gerlinde,

Still can't upload to Muvipix, so I just uploaded an image to my account on MediaFire:

The name of the file is 100_5101.JPG

Have fun.

Hi RJ,

I investigated the upload issue and was able to duplicate. It seems the image dimension (not file size, like I originally assumed) was the culprit. Even though the file size could be quite small, if the dimensions are large, it still must create a thumbnail for the post - and this info is created using .BMP of all things!

In any event, I increased the memory a bit to allow the "thumbnail" to be created.

Thanks Ron. But the image I tried to upload had the United States facing out.

Robert, what can Neat Image or Noise Ninja do for this image? Could you also post an "after" image?

Here is what I came up with:
I used Photoshop CS5 and opened the photo in Camera Raw to correct Exposure, Color and Noise. After that I opened the file in Photoshop and selectively corrected the dark parts like the globe stand. All the damage is in the blue channel. There are other ways to go about that. This is just a quick and dirty...

My 2nd version is done in Windows Life Photo Gallery. Just using the simple editing tools available there. They came out a bit different in color tone. But since I don't know how it should look like Left it at that.

Sorry, I got distracted.

The photo of the globe was taken in very low light. The lens was open for 8 seconds. The light came from another room.

Here is my color corrected globe. I used the Neat Image filter, then the Color Balance and Photo Filter adjustment layers. I haven't purchased the Ninja plug-in. If I had tons of photos to do, I would get it because it is faster setting the controls.

Thanks for the Poloroid link. I still have PhotoMax Pro installed on my p.c.. It has the best photo stitching I've ever used. I just tested out the scratch remover and it works great!

Just FYI: I'm using PSE10. After installing PolaDSR, copy PolaDSR.8bf to your C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 10\Plug-Ins directory. Then look for it in the Filters menu.
