Chuck just posted something about DeNoise from Topaz Labs, so I downloaded the trial and tried it out on the globe. This is my very first try with the filter. Besides using DeNoise, I used the Photo Filter adjustment layer using the Deep Blue preset, and the Brightness and Contrast adjustment layer, and Smart Sharpen filter.

Used Topaz DeNoise.jpg

You really have to try it out for yourself so you can zoom way in and pan around in Photoshop.

After reading the PDF tutorial, I'm still confused, though, about what constitutes a good noise sample. For example, in Neat Image you need to select noise from a plain background and a large enough area in order to have a good sample, but in DeNoise it seems you don't have to worry about that so much. Someone, like me, that has used some other noise filter products will be confused in the beginning of the tutorial. I guess I'll have to read it again.

I thought this was the best of the noise cleaners I've tried and would consider buying. You can spend a lot more time working on an image with this filter than with Neat Image or Ninja. There are also handy presets if you are in a hurry.

I was impressed enough with DeNoise to buy it myself. That was several years ago and I'm still happy with it.

FYI,

Noise Ninja is now a legacy product. Noise Ninja has been suceeded by Photo Ninja, a raw conversion processor.

Bob, you posted just at the right time. I was just about to plunk down some money on DeNoise5, but now I will wait until I try Photo Ninja, which includes Noise Ninja 3.

Instead of trying to get rid of the noise, I left it in and then used Topaz Labs Simplify plug-in to create a wild looking image of my globe. That was a lot more fun than trying to get rid of the noise with Denoise.

Thank you, Gerlinde. I sure hope the Webinars will be recordered for later viewing. Some of the times of the Webinars are not going to work for me.

Since getting DeNoise, I've gotten DeJpeg, Simplify, Detail, Remask, and Adjust when there was a 30% discount. I must like these products or have a strong desire to burn a hole in my pocket (which I almost did yesterday with a rechargeable battery and coins in my pocket. Yeow!).

Good thing I watched the webinar on InFocus, otherwise I would not have seen how to correctly use the InFocus plug-in to automatically bring an image back into focus.

There is a special on the Topaz photoFXLab program. Enter code PFXL during checkout and get $30 off. That makes it $49.99 instead of $79.99. The web page doesn't say how long that's good for. http://www.topazlabs.com/photofxlab/ One really nice feature is the extensive library of tones, requiring internet access, you can apply using "InstaTone."

Besides using Topaz Denoise5, I used InFocus and Clean3. The InFocus and Clean3 layers were blended with 44% Multiply in Photoshop.

Here is the before and after:

I've been scanning photos that my parents have collected over the years. Would these tools help with rescue and restoration of these or are they mostly for fixing today's digital photos?

The Topaz plug-ins can easily improve just about any photo. I've tried them on 35mm slides from the 50's, old color photographs, faded Poloroid photos, digital camera photos. The one plug-in that can do alot is the Adjust 5 plug-in. What would take a long time to do with what's inherint in Photoshop can be done very quickly with the addition of Topaz plug-ins.
