Kodak BD-R media: Not recommended

Postby George Tyndall » Mon May 16, 2011 11:33 am

At 25 for $40 on a spindle, I convinced myself that the reason they are so inexpensivie is that they are on a spindle rather than in individual quality cases like my usual BD-Rs, Panasonic.

Wrong!

Although I tried a number, Windows 7 did not recognize a single one of them when loaded into my machine's Blu-ray writer.

As Fry's has a policy of not accepting for return opened media, I expected I was out of luck, however, the clerk did accept the opened package--and put them back out on the shelf with an "open box" sticker attached (10 percent off to the next purchaser).

This is what I would recommend George

The price is right at less than $2 each, and the quality can't be beat, they are also inkjet printable :)

AND they have the Full Face (0.87in)=Printable Hub just like the SDs that I use PLUS there is free 1-day shipping to my address, for $2 each including tax and IN ADDITION I save at least $10 in gas by not driving back and forth to Fry's!

:tx:

I've already ordered a pack and hope to report back on them in 2 days.

Here I am, reporting back as promised.

Chuck, before opening the pack, I did some research. These are the new LTH="Low to HIgh" technology that Verbatim has put forth.

Further investigation reveals that

1) folks are complaining, on Amazon, about lack of compatibility with Blu-ray players and fully half the spindle being defective and

2) Amazon sells a newer version of the item, 97333, for about $8 less than mediastore's sale price

Luckily, supermediastore has a very simple and easy return policy.

So for BD-Rs, it appears I will stick with Panasonic which, according to my research, are made by Taiyo Yuden (and which look VERY elegant with the shiny chrome ring that surrounds the hub and the printable Panasonic imprint near the outer rim).

When I've run out (the manufacturer has apparently discontinued them), I''ll likely go with these, from supermediastore:

Thanks for bringing this vendor to my attention.

I have not had any issues with the Verbatim discs at all George, otherwise I wouldn't recommend them. I have had no issues recording or playing on any one of three Blu Ray players.

I often wondered about the Kodak BD-R that I saw at Fry's.

I see that SuperMediaStore has my Sony BD-R in bulk with white printable to hub. I'm partial to Sony Blu-ray discs, so I would probably go with those when the time comes and the price is lower, way lower.
