problems playing 720p mkv file

Postby sohal231 » Wed Feb 23, 2011 12:44 am

I have a movie that is in 720p in mkv format.

This plays in NitroTV, but I experinence glitches such as skipping (the playback isn't smooth as it should be). The file will play in Sapphire, but with large "macroblocks" and smudges in the picture (the sound is just fine, but the video is all messed up). Keep in mind that this is from an external 1 TB USB hard drive.

The same file plays PERFECTLY on my laptop.

Anyone know what might be the cause? Is this a universal problem with 720p files? Or mkv files?

Can anyone help me, please?

It's not a universal problem with 720p or mkv.

MKV is a container format. That is, it does not define the contents of the file, it only defines how the content is stored in the file. The content itself is defined by the audio and video codecs that were used to compress and encode the content. It's like a shopping bag, the same bag can hold many different kinds of products.

Some codecs create highly compressed content using sophisticated algorithms that require a very fast cpu or hardware assist to decode smoothly. In addition, high definition content, like 720p or 1080p, requires more resources to decode than standard definition content. It's likely the problem is a combination of the speed of your system and the codecs used. If the cpu can't keep up with the decoding you can get skips and glitches like this. If the player doesn't have access to the correct codec it may not play at all or if an incorrect codec is used, the picture can be messed up, or you may hear sound but have no video, for example. These types of problems can also occur if the content is corrupted somehow. However, since you can play from your laptop, that's not likely the case with this file.

I'm not familiar with NitroTV or Sapphire, so I can't give you advice on how to setup or troubleshoot. Perhaps someone else here has had experience with these.
