Question for Steve: Using Both PRE 7 & 8

Postby George Tyndall » Sun Oct 11, 2009 12:08 pm

Steve,

I've been thinking about purchasing the 8 bundle as an auxiliary program. I would continue to use PSE4 and the 7 bundle for most of my work, but I would also have the 8 bundle available if ever I needed to take advantage of one of the new features for a particular project.

My question is this: If I install 8 using my current Plus ID, will Adobe stop sending me "new stuff" for 7? If I want the new stuff for both 7 and 8, do I need to use 2 separate IDs and pay 2 separate fees of $49.95/year?

Thank you.

That is a good question!

If you've got a Plus account, your Plus account is with Photoshop.com, not with any one program. So, if you've got a Plus account, you've got a plus account whether you're logged in through version 7 or 8.

So Adobe will send new transitions and effects to whatever program I have open at the time?

Well, technically Adobe doesn't send them. The program links to them on the site. So, yes, the Plus content will be available to either program, as long as you're logged in to the same account on both.

Thanks for the reply, Steve.

BTW, my chief interest in 8 was that I might someday find useful the ability to "recompose" a wide-screen photo into standard size, as mentioned in the "Tour," however, when I tried to find that feature in the trial version of 8, I was unsuccessful. Performing a Search with the words "transform," "recompose" and "resize" did not bring up the desired information. Can you point me in the correct direction?

Thank you.

George,

If you want more info about the Recompose Tool of Photoshop Elements 8, you can go to :
the Adobe site at
http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-photosh ... pose-tool/
OR
http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/learningcenter/
the fourth video in the list on that page shows the Recompose Tool

Thank you, Barb O, for the information. That one powerful tool alone makes the 8 bundle worth having.

Yes, Recompose looks very interesting. I don't have PE, I just buy PRE alone and use PS CS4, but with features like that I should probably buy the bundle. Hmmmm...

The recompose photo in PSE 8 is based on functions inherited from Photoshop CS, so it would be possible to do this same work in PS CS4 although I suspect that its functions are named differently and that PSE might have more step-by-step guidance on how to accomplish this function.

Since PSE 6 there have been several functions like Group Shot that I think are valuable for adjusting family photos that are likely to be used in videos. Specifically, the Group Shot function is useful for family photos with many people where there is almost never a single shot where everyone looks good.

If you have a series of shots of a family group, the Group Shot function
-- makes it easier to choose the best overall shot of the group, then extract person 4 from another shot in the same series and then place that person (or part of that person like the head) in to the best overall shot
-- as well as making this process easier, my observation is that another benefit of Group Shot is that its automatic blending of the person (partial or whole) in to the rest of the best overall shot is much better than I was achieving manually

I plan to have tutorials on both Recompose and Photomerge in our next batch of Muvipix products.

Thanks Twosheds. Being a relatively new CS4 user, I hadn't gotten to that yet.
