Hi Dave, Thank you for your advice. It enabled me to figure out how it works in Pre8. For your information, here is what I did to copy just the audio track in Pre8:
Share>Personal Computer>Select AVI>Advanced>Un-Enable Video>Audio Tab>Select either Mono or Stereo.
Produces an .avi file which plays in Windows Media Player. If Adobe Flash Video is selected instead of AVI it will produce an .flv file which plays in RealPlayer. Both these are compatible with my audio editing suite (Goldwave). Selecting MPEG produces an .ac3 file which plays in QuickTime and is not compatible with my audio editing suite.

PS to Chuck: As far as I could tell, Pre8 does not give you the option of exporting to .wav
