Replace 4:3 black bars with video?

Postby Ken Jarstad » Tue May 25, 2010 5:43 pm

The effect I am looking for might be a real teaser. ::wav::

If I have 4:3 video to be inserted into a 16:9 project I will get black bars on the right and left. However, I have seen on network TV an "effect" where the normally black areas are filled in with a fuzzy reproduction of the right and left sides of the displaying video. The fuzzy video reminds me somewhat of the title bar area on a Windows 7 application window in how it allows the background to show through with a fuzzy, muted image. This effect is much more attractive than black bars. Any takers?

This is what I have played with. And 4:3 fits right in between.
I've got two more that just say wide screen in red but I can't find them. #-o
Also just using a muvipix 16:9 background that you can blur up is also an option
I like on CNN it will say HD in red at certain times. I tried copying that.

Thanks

OK Richard. I have seen static backgrounds and animated backgrounds when footage from older 4:3 cameras is inserted but the one I am interested in somehow replicates the displayed video and fills it in the place of the black bars. And Google just doesn't give up anything close.

You could probably do it using two video tracks in a 16:9 project with duplicate video files.

On the upper track is the 4:3 video.
On the lower track is the duplicate 4:3 video, but interpreted as 16:9.
You would blur the edges of the video on the upper track.
You would obscure to some degree the video on the lower track.

Or put curtains on the left and right edges.

Nice ideas RJ, I like the stretched video on the lower track with the blur, great idea :)

GOT IT! Thanks Robert.

I put a .04 Gaussian Blur on video track 1 which was allowed to assume the 16:9 aspect ratio. Video track 2 appears overlaid in its' native 4:3 AR. There remained a narrow black bar separating the images so opened the Video Event Pan and Crop in VMS and stretched the track 2 size slightly, leaving no black - and I also was able to conceal the analog head switching noise on the bottom.

That's exactly what I was looking for. Works great. Thanks!

Note: That black area surrounding the analog frame also made the outer edge of the blurred frame look sort of muddy so I used the Vegas Event Pan and Crop on Video track 1 also, enlarging the frame slightly until the far right and left edges looked good.
