The Scene: On a canal narrowboat. On entering a tunnel all that can be seen in the far distance is a small spot of light. Narrowboat.jpg Long Tunnel.jpg The problem: Stabilising the video so that small spot stays dead still for the duration of the clip. I have tried Warp stabiliser in both PPro and AE. I have also tried Mercalli v2. Neither of them will do the job to the standard that I wish to obtain. Suggestions? At present it seems like my only alternative is hand crafting LOTS of keyframes. By the way, that is not me on the narrowboat; it is a pic from Google just in case you were not sure what a narrowboat looked like.

John,
Could you add a psd layer of just the black part with the white spot as a still image. feather the black so you do not see the shake of the video. You could then keyfram the white spot to get bigger as you get closer to the end of the tunnel??

Just to close this off.
What I did was to create a .PSD on a transparent background of a diagonal cross using a very fine brush setting. Then I superimposed this on the video clip, stretching it to the full length of the clip.
I then zoomed in on the clip and made sure that the intersection of the cross was centred on one edge of the tunnel exit. Following that it was manual keyframing all the way - not on every frame but on sufficient to achieve what I wanted.
I think that the reason the stabilising software struggled was because the "white spot at the far end of the tunnel" changed its size as the clip progressed.

John, did you try the track motion in AE to stabilize? The white against the black would be a very good point of contrast. But, I have had better luck with the track motion using 2 crosshairs of contrast to stabilize. It may be worth a try.
