HELP, iTunes did an update now PRE4 won't open

Please help me!!!

I had PRE4 minimized and went to iTunes to find a song, iTunes did an automatic update and restarted my computer, now PRE4 won't open. Should I just uninstall PRE4 and reinstall? Because PRE4 was minimized and I did not get a chance to close it before iTunes restarted my computer could it have caused this problem. iTunes up0dated quicktime also.

What happens when you try to start Premiere Elements, Aliza?

Try launching the program and holding down the Ctrl, Alt and Shift buttons on the left side of your computer.

It's unlikely you've seriously corrupted the program.

Hi Steve,
When I click on shortcut, PRE4 opens, then I click on project name, I tried new project also, it says its loading, gets to near end and minimizes intself to taskbar. Then if I try to maximize it says program not responding. I used your suggestion, same response. I have uninstalled quicktime because iTunes updated that also. Still same response. Should I add/remove PRE4 and reinstall??

Hi Chuck,
I am just sick about this mess. I haven't burned my slideshow yet!!!!
Anyway, if I remove and reinstall, what happens to the 1000x750 pan & zooms I added to My Presets? Do I just add them again? Also, will PRE4 play my saved project with the clips I used the My Presets on if they are not added back into the program?

I had my project open when iTunes shut down my computer, if the project got corrupted would it cause this to happen. I did try opening a new project but it just minimized PRE4 and would not respond.

For Premiere Elements to work you must have Quicktime Installed, so install that first.
Then just install the program again, do not uninstall first. See if that fixes the problem.
It will simply overwrite the existing software files and make the registry entries and connections again.
Shouldn't hurt anything that you have already done.

If it still doesn't work then uninstall the program and choose to save your preferences when asked.
That should keep everything the same when you install the program again.

Thanks for everyones help. Here is what I did, but really don't know what worked.

The very first thing I did was back up all of "My Documents" before uninstalling anything. JUST IN CASE. I had already backed up the finished project onto a flashdrive and an external 1TB harddrive, so I had the newest backup available.

This is the order I did a few things in:
I uninstalled quick time, then reininstalled from Apple site.
Then I tried to do a dirty reinstall, ie: use original CD and said repair. Did not work.
Then I uninstalled PRE4 from add/remove
Then I reinstalled PRE4 & said save preferences

I shut down & reopened each time I performed anything.

When I clicked on the PRE4 icon it had me register again, I did so.
When PRE4 opened I clicked on Recent Project: My project name was still there
It started to open project and then minimized to taskbar again and would not respond. I right clicked and hit close, took a few trys but it closed.

I thought maybe the whole project was corrupt, so I deleted original location project copy and replaced it with my last good backup on my flashdrive.

I then called a techie friend of mine. He had me click on PRE4 shortcut icon, I chose an old project, let it try to open, it went to minimize again, he told me to just leave it there (do not try to RC & close). So we waited maybe 45 seconds and low and behold it opened and stayed open!!!!!

His opinion was that when I did the iTunes & Quicktime update, forgetting that PRE4 had my project open but was minimized to the tray, that Quicktime created an error because PRE4 was using it at the time. And that the program had to do something to correct it, and I wasn't giving it enought time before closeing it out on the tray. MAYBE the right answer, I don't really know.

So finally I tried to open the big project I had been working on from the NEW backup copy. IT WORKS, IT WORKS, IT WORKS. I have spent over 5 hours on this problem. I will never, never again, update anything while something else is open. Very valuable lesson here.

My question now is this: When I opened my clean project copy PRE4 did some kind of configuring on my soundtracks etc. Everything is still there, but I had totally renedered the entire project, and now the line is back to red. Do I just hit enter, and render again? or do I have to delete old rendering?

I totally agree.
About the rendering? Should I just hit enter, or do I have to manually delete the old stuff from my backup copy , delete rendered files is not availabe under Timeline at top of program. There is already over 6GB in the project folder, will it just go over these, or am I going to have a hugh rendering file of 12GB??

Don't want to do anything till I hear from you.

Just press Enter and let the program figure it out. It's pretty smart -- and it's not likely to double the space it needs.
