Page turn jumps for 2 frames

Postby Peru » Fri Nov 13, 2009 8:53 am

Windows XP MCE, core two duo, 2GB RAM
Three 500 GB internal hard drives (operating system & misc. files, video & pictures, backup), all with about 200GB free space and defragged.
528MB Nvidea graphics
Pre El 3.02

Source files: PSDs 1152 X 576 at 72 pixels/in.

When creating page turns using the 3D effect, as the page goes from either 90 degrees or -90 degrees (depending on whether it is a right or left page), two frames before it finishes the turn at 0 degees the page lifts itself off the background slightly an then comes down in the correct place at the 0 degree keyframe.

This is an intermittant problem. It shows up in the rendered version and the unrendered version and is visible as a slightly noticeable jump when burned to DVD.

I happens both when I keyframe manually, or when I copy from an OK page turn and paste attributes.
Sometimes I can split the clip and delete the two offending frames and sometimes that doesn't work.

I tried deleting the preview, rendered, and cache files, but it didn't make a difference.

In one instance, I just kept copying and pasting attributes until I got it to work OK after about six tries.
The last time this has happened I have not been able to fix it.

Is this a bug, or what could I be doing wrong?

This has happened to me often and there are really only two solutions that I can find.
Either there are random keyframes that need to be deleted, check the keyframe timeline and see if there are any that don't belong there. The other solution is to completely start over, I've had to do that more often than I would like to admit but it makes for good practice :)

Thanks, Chuck.
I did check for out of place keyframes and even deleted all keyframes and did it again.
Not the answer that I wanted to hear, since I'm on a deadline, but I'll plug away at it.

It's really tough sometimes, seems like the effects just won't cooperate.

After Effects has much better tools for this kind of thing. One of my goals with learning After Effects is to find better ways of doing similar things in Premiere Elements.

Along with the Basic 3D have you added the Transform Effect too? I couldn't always get the 3D effect to move smoothly but when I added Transform in addition to the 3D effect it really helped.

I'm at work and not at my editing computer now.
If you could refresh my memory, what is the Transform Effect, and what would I add?

Peru, have you watched the Page Turn tutorials? It's all in there.

Transform gives you more control over the scaling of height and width independently as well as the skew.
It really helped to smooth out some of the movement when I keyframed the height scale as the page was turning.

It's all detailed in the tutorials.

I viewed all of the available tutorials. I haven't had any problems with alignment of my pages, as I am very careful about how I prepare the pages using a transparant background twice the width of the page and create either "right" or "left" pages. I put both facing pages on the background and save each page
with the other page's layer deleted.

I think I found when the split clip workaround works and when it doesn't:

If you split the clip so that you isolate the bad frames and right click and choose "clear" and then slide the resulting two clips together it does not fix the jump.

If however, you choose "delete and close gap", it will fix the jump. :)
You will only lose the two frames that you cut out and it does not appear to be at all noticeable.

Inconvenient, but it seems to work all of the time.

Wow, that's a great tip Peru. Funny how it works one way and not the other though :-k

I found what was causing the problem. \:D/

I needed the clip to be 25 seconds. The default size when brought in from the media panel is 5 seconds.
If I made it 25 seconds by dragging the end of the clip on the timeline, all was OK.
If I used time stretch (even before applying any effects or keyframes) to make it 25 seconds, the two frame lift would occur. #-o

Now if I can remember this next time I do a page turn project...
