Export to tape

Postby PaulC » Mon Sep 21, 2009 10:07 pm

I had a question in January regarding importing and exporting with a Canon Vixia hv30. The importing problem was solved by using hdvsplit instead of pe4 to import. I now have a hv40 and am still having problems exporting to tape. I have done all of the suggested trouble shooting tips I have found but the problem persists. If I try to export a 10 minute clip it will stop at a random spot and I get a message on the camera telling me to check the hd input. If I split the clip into 3 short pieces they all export fine so the problem is not in the clip or the camcorder. I don't want to have to break up every project into 3 minute slices. Has anyone else had this problem or has anyone any suggestions for troubleshooting it.

Hello Paul. I'm not sure that this will address your problem but there are a couple of suggestions that I would make. Firstly your hard disc. Check that it is formatted for NTFS and not FAT32 (I assume that it will already be NTFS but worth a check).

If it is the only hard drive in your system as your signature implies, then I would suggest that you install a second drive of 500Gb or 1TB. Rationale - the 300Gb disc will have some space taken up by installed programs, paging file....etc. Editing HD media with PrEl will very quickly consume what disc real estate you have left with rendered files, etc. and that might be the source of your problem, PrEl running out of workspace during the file export.

I dont know why but the later versions of Premiere Elements have had this propblem... the timelime just randomly stops during playback. The only real solution was suggested by Robert... the freeware Windows Sniper, this "encapsulates" the program and stops these random timeline stopages.

Thanks for the replies. I probably won't rush out and get a new hard drive just yet however I will clear as much junk as possible to free up some space. I might try Windows Sniper as long as it is relatively easy to use. I can Encapsulate my project with this but I have no idea what that means or if I would know what to do with it. I'll download it and see if it comes with any instructions. I think pe4 or 7 should be able to export to tape without the user having to resort to 3rd party programs. The main advantage of tape is being able to archive material. I wonder do other editing programs out there have this problem. If anyone knows one that doesn't i will buy it and scrap pe4.

You may want to look at Sony Vegas Studio... download the trial version and give it a try out.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a try. I know some trial versions don't have all the features and export to tape may not be available. I've also had problems when I have to Editors on the same computer. I'll try it over the weekend and see what happens.

I downloaded the trial version of Vegas Movie Studio HD9, which is the cheapest Vegas version, ($39.99), and tonight I exported 11 minutes of hd video back to tape without a hitch. I guess PE4 is the problem! VMS HD9 doesn't have a whole lot of features so I might try one of the more expensive editions. Its unfortunate that premier lacks this simple capability but I guess there is not much demand for it or they would fix it. Thanks again for the advice.
