flickering titles

Postby spressman » Thu May 28, 2009 12:04 pm

I'm trying to figure out how to eliminate a slight -- but noticeable -- flicker that occurs whenever I fade out a title in PE4. I've double-checked the opacity levels, and all seems normal there. In other words, the opacity remains at 100 percent until the fade-out begins but then the title appears to brighten for just a moment before the fade-out begins.

I thought perhaps this was just a quirk when previewing in the monitor. But it is still visible after burning the production to a DVD.

Any thoughts?

thanks,
steve

Hi Steve,
Is it a flicker or more of a flash?

If it is more of a flash then do this;
Do not set the start to 100% opacity, start it at 98% and see if that fixes the problem.
This has been a known fix for this problem.

Otherwise, if that doesn't work or it is an actual flicker, you can try the flicker removal, right click on the title and select Field Options/Flicker Removal.

And last but not least is the Anti-Flicker under the clip Motion properties. It has a setting from 0.00 to 1.00 :)

Thanks, Chuck. You're right, it's absolutely a flash, not a flicker. So I'll try adjusting the opacity levels as you suggested.

Be sure to split the clip at the point of the fade out unless it is a short clip. If the clip is very long you don't want to need to render the whole thing just to set the opacity down a couple percent. Just split the clip and add the fade. Are you using the automatic fade (right click/fade Out/Audio and Video) or are you keyframing it manually?

Some of the fades are automatic but others are key-framed (the flash is appearing on just about all of my titles).

Sounds like you and Chuck have this narrowed down.

Here's a link that has some good info on Titles. While it's based around Adobe Encore and DVD authoring, much holds true for Titles in an NLE too. Link: http://web.archive.org/web/20061030084757/http://www.greatdv.com/post/blurtitles.htm

Good luck,

Thanks, Bill, for this link. I'll certainly take a look, and perhaps it will also help to explain why some of the colors I sometimes choose for my titles never look as sharp as they should once I burn to DVD and play on TV screens.

Thanks Bill! Didn't know about the illegal colors. Usually use 000 for black. Most of my titles I apply a 3% Gaussian Blur.
