canon hv30 hd

Postby moviemaker » Wed Apr 15, 2009 1:34 pm

just a question i am thinking about getting the canon hv30, here in the next couple of days, and i haven't worked with hd before, i would like to shoot my sons baseball games in hd, and edit them in pe4, and burn to a regular dvd, is there any issues with pe4 and the hd, and how good of quality will the hd be if i am burning it to a regular dvd. i am hoping to order the camera in the next couple of days, so any info you have the hv30 and issues with pe4 would be great to know, oh and is the hv30 ok with vista 64?

thank you

The only issue is burning HDV to a regular DVD. This is not as easy as it may sound and the DVD will not play in a standard DVD player.
Might be best to record in HDV, capture and edit in SD and burn to a regular DVD. The quality will still be much better than a standard camcorder.

You will probably want to capture with HDVSplit if you are going to capture HDV, you can capture with WinDV if you are going to capture SD.

When you are ready to purchase please use one of the links on our resources page or at chuckengels.com (depending on where you plan to purchase from) :)

If you have PE4 author HD footage to a disk in SD, while it still looks good, it really softens the image a lot, giving everything a slight blurry appearance. Like Chuck said, it is probably best to just capture and edit it as SD for the time being. Also, with the HV30, I would avoid the 24p mode if you want to keep things simple. There are great tutorials out there, but unless you will be authoring in HD and watching on a TV capable of 24p, you are in the end just adding a lot of work. So you probably want to keep it in 30p mode.

There is a link to Amazon on the Resources page or go to the Muvipix Store, that's even easier http://astore.amazon.com/chuckengelsco-20?node=0&page=2
Still $599.00 USD
There is also a link to B&H, which I would recommend personally, here http://www.chuckengels.com/
Anything you purchase after clicking on the link will be credited to Muvipix :)

Thanks :TU:

Yes it is fine with Vista 64. (That is what I'm running that I connect my HV20 up to).

moviemaker, I don't have experience with vista 64, and according to Chuck you may be unhappy with PRE4's ability to burn a SD DVD from an HDV (1440x1080i) Timeline, but I have had very impressive results doing the same with PRE7, which I've detailed in the following link:

I was talking about burning HDV to a regular DVD, not burning an SD DVD from a HDV project ;)

i was thinking i could capture in hd, but edit in sd, until i get a bluray burner, and just burn a sd to the dvds. in order to watch what i shoot in hd i should be able to hook the hv30 to my hdtv, via hdmi right? am i also correct in assuming that i can edit in hd, and then export back to the hv30 and put my edited pe4 movie back on a hd tape? in order to watch it on my tv? if i am way wrong please let me know, i want to make sure i understand it all correctly. also i see the hv40 is coming in a couple of weeks from what i can gather not much of a difference aside from native 24p ,and a better image sensor, otherwise the hv30 is fairly similar, what do you all think? i'd much rather pay 599 for a hv30 than 999 for hv40, but if the improvements are worth the price difference, i might have to consider it.

I've been using B&H for decades and never had a problem. Bonus: B&H, last I knew, includes, at no extra charge, a DVD that will help you learn the HV30 quickly. You can order from B&H via Chuck's web site.

Ok, I have this camera and just got back from Mexico (no Swine Flu yet), but I want to take bits and pieces from my video to put this particular little testimonial of the resort together. What is SD, I thought I could only capture video in HDV? Some of this information is way over my head.

The HV30 writes its data on the tape only in HD. You have the choice when capturing data from the device to get it as HD or SD. Even if you get it as HD, you can bring it into a SD project and write a SD DVD from it.

I recommend you set the camera for SD and everything after that will be "normal" PRE stuff. I will check the settings and post when I have them.

OK.

Plug the Firewire cable from your PC into the HDV/DV port at the back under the big rubber cover. Make sure you turn on your HV30 AFTER you plug in the cable. Click the main switch to Play.

Press the Func. button, then scroll down to the bottom Menu.

Go to Play/Out Setup1, and in that menu click on Playback Std and set to DV - you will prompted to be sure.

After that when you capture from the device it will be standard SD.

By the way, if you can't get the rubber cover back on later, press the TOP in first.

Is this enough or do you need more?
