Help with DVD menus

Postby RJ Johnston » Tue Dec 23, 2008 6:01 pm

A while back I wrote some instructions for using PGCEdit to modify a Premiere Elements 3.0.2 DVD to play back the entire movie even though scenes have stops after them. There may be some differences now in PGCEdit 8.6, but I'll put the instructions here just in case you want to play with it:

Here is a way to seamlessly play back all chapters even though the chapters have "stops." Would someone like to try following the instructions below? You need Premiere Elements 3.0.2 and PgcEdit 8.3.

Below are steps for using PgcEdit 8.3 to alter a DVD menu created with Premiere Elements 3.0.2 so that when you select a chapter to play, control returns to the main menu after that chapter has played, yet when you choose Play All, all chapters are seamlessly played back without stops.

Before trying this on a large project, try it on a 1 minute movie with the Standard menu and 4 or 5 chapter markers. Don't use stop markers. The stops will be entered using PgcEdit.

A. In Premiere Elements 3.0.2, create a project with a menu and scene markers. Don't use stop markers.

B. Export to DVD folder.

C. Start PGCEdit 8.3.

D1. From the menu select File > OpenDVD, then select the folder -- such as 20070620_001548 -- that was created by Premiere Elements. That folder will contain the OPENDVD folder and VIDEO_TS folder.

D2. The "Find BOVs" dialogbox will open. Click "Select All" then "Scan" and then "Close." In PGCEdit version 9.0 this dialogbox never opened and it appeared that the BOV's were automatically checked.

E. Select the line with "Title 1" from the list on the left. It should be the last item in the list, e.g. VTST 1,1 TTN 1 (1:03) Title 1.

F. From the menu select Title > New "Play All" Title > OK. This will create a new line for Title 2.

G. Select the line that has "2b." That represents the main menu page with the Play and Scenes buttons.

H. From the menu select Menu > Show/Edit Menu Buttons or BOVs. That will display a window showing your main menu, with selectable buttons.

I. Click on the "Play Movie" or "Play All" menu button.

J. Click the wide command button, below your menu, that has the text "(JumpVTS_TT)...."

K. In the PgcEdit - Command Editor, where it says "Jump to the entry PGC of TTN 1...", change the 1 to 2. Click OK. That creates a second title.

L. Click Close on the Menu Buttons dialogbox window.

M. In the list on the left, double-click the line that has "Title 1", which should now be the next-to-last line in the list on the left. That will bring up the Pgc Editor dialogbox window. There will be a column with the heading "Cell Cmd #." Change each 0 in that column to 1. Don't mistakenly change the entries in the column just to the left under "Cell Still Time."

N. There is another column with the heading "Seamless Joint." Uncheck each box in that column."

O. Click OK.

P. From the commands list on the right, right-click on the line under "**** post commnads", e.g. "1 (CallSS) Call the VMGM PGC 3, resume Cell 1."

Q. From the pop-up menu select Copy.

R. Right-click the next line that reads "*******cell commands:" and from the pop-up menu select "Paste After." What this will do is cause a return to the main menu after a single chapter has played. There is a way to cause a return to the chapter menu, but that is for another time.

S. From the menu select "File > SaveDVD." Click Yes or OK to the rest of any messages.

T. From the menu select "File > Check DVD +/-R Size" and make sure the contents will fit on a disc.

U. Exit PGCEdit.

V. Now you can burn the Video_TS folder using your 3rd-party burning application. Before you do, you may want to move to your desktop the PgcEdit backup folder that's been created inside the VIDEO_TS folder. That way you won't be burning that on the DVD. After burning, you can move it back. Some applications won't burn the PgcEdit backup folder, so you may not have to move it.
