Jitter after enhancement

Hello I am new to this forum

When I first started using PE3 I experienced Jitter problems this was resolved by reversing the field dominance of the clips.
On my latest project I increased the contrast of some of the clips this resulted in the jitter returning. I have tried reversing the FD again but this doesnt work it appears that if you apply any enhancements for example increasing the contrast or the saturation the clips go back to top field first and cant be changed. Does anyone have any ideas?

You need to apply only reverse field dominance to the clip and export it as DV-AVI, File>Export>Movie. Bring this back into a new project and apply the contrast or other effects. Note once re-imported you dont need to apply reverse field dominance again.

Thanks I will try that, seems like a bit of a work around to apply enhancements though what a pain. Do you know of any way of finding out if there is jitter present without burning to disc you waste a lot of discs the way I am doing it

My guess is that a lot of this has to do with your source files.

You shouldn't need this workaround if you're editing with DV-AVIs captured over FireWire from a miniDV camcorder.

Yes your quite right I am working with a Canon mini DVD camcorder DC/95 AE is one of the few programmes that even recognises the discs so I am not complaining just looking for a solution

Easiest solution would be to convert you camcorder's files to DV-AVIs before you bring them into Premiere Elements -- then all will work as designed.

You can convert VOBs to DV-AVIs using the free download VirtualDubMOD.

And you can convert MPEGs using MPEGstreamclip, also free.

Hi Steve, thanks for your help,
I downloaded Virtual Dub pulled a disc into it and saved as an AVI that changed it from 1.33 GB to 26 GB. It played OK in VD but when i pulled it into PE there was no audio what am I doing wrong?

You can't use VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod to convert an MPEG or VOB files that have upper field dominance unless you download and use a special plug-in, "Reverse Field Dominance," for VirtualDub(Mod).

You won't have this problem if you use MPEG Streamclip.

So can MPEGstreamclip convert VOBs, and should I be recommending that instead for converting DVD video, Robert?

I don't have MPEG Streamclip installed on my computer anymore, but the last time I tried it, MPEG Streamclip strung together all the VOBs on a DVD so the video was seamless. So MPEG Streamclip would be my choice for doing that kind of stuff.

But I don't recommend converting VOBs to DV-AVI, especially for NTSC where DV-AVI uses 4:1:1 chroma subsampling. You won't believe what it does to your pixels, although from a distance it is hard to tell. You would be going from 4:2:0 to 4:1:1 back to 4:2:0 if you plan to output to DVD again. But it does improve video with low light noise.

Hi all, my only reason for doing this is so that VOBs work better in PE as per my first post. I downloaded MPEG Streamclip and the VOBs go into it fine but when you save as DV-AVI you get a whole drop down list I am a novice at this and I have no idea which configuration on the list will work best in PE can you help?

Hi Thanks got that, it says use Apple DV/DVPRO_NTSC codec I am in the UK and PAL is the TV standard so should I change that to DVC pro PAL ?

DV PAL or DVC PRO PAL. To tell if you have converted it correctly when you put it in the timeline there should be no red line above it.

He he I am almost at the point of giving up with this its getting too complicated. I did everything as advised and the AVI file went into PE OK (no red line ) but the audio file was all crumped up at one end and garbled, perhaps its best to just accept that PE wont let you do enhancements.
