Freeze Frames go smaller when rendered??

Postby Tony Wade » Sat Oct 05, 2013 11:58 am

PE3...I have been ending clips with freeze frames (using the freeze frame camera icon), and when it plays in the timeline it's fine, then when I render or export to avi, the freeze frames go smaller, into a smaller frame.
I know this is a simple fix, but I can't remember it...?
I checked for previous answers on this but can't seem to find one...

Do I unclick 'scale to frame size'?

This is a very strange problem, Tony. Are you saying that when you output your movie, the video looks fine but the freeze frame doesn't?

The freeze frame is rendered at exactly the same size of the video. It should look identical to it.

Do you get the same results if you output something other than an AVI? Like a WMV?

Yes Steve, the freezed frame reduces in size when the show is exported to avi. When it plays before export in the timeline, it looks as it should, a freeze frame. I should add that the FF looks like the original shot, reduced with a black box around it.
I have not put into wmv as I am taking 2 avi's and joining together in a separate project as a master for making dvd.
I've tried checking various video options on the FF's.
I'm stumped...

Could it have something to do with 'field options' ?
Every time I try something, I have to wait 30 mins for it to render, so it's time consuming to try stuff.

Why don't you try just outputting that segment of your movie as a WMV and see what your results are?

BTW, what are your project settings (listed under the Edit menu) and what model of camcorder is your original video coming from?

The project settings are DV PAL (not widescreen).
The original video came from a client, so no idea the camera, but I transferred their footage from dvd onto DSR-11, then inputted from the DSR to PE3. The camera was an 8mm Hi8 set at 4:3.
I don't seem to have a setting to export to WMV.
Does that help?

Every version of Premiere Elements outputs WMVs, Tony. Where are you looking for the output options?

I've been watching this topic with interest because I'm familiar with a similar, but not exactly the same, problem. Because it didn't match Tony's issue exactly I hesitated to chime in. But I guess there's no harm done at this point, and there's a slight chance that it may be helpful in some way.

In V3 I remember having an issue with freeze frames in widescreen projects where they would insert into the project "squished" horizontally. However, this was evident and obvious right in the project; I didn't have to wait for export or burning to see it. My solution was to manually resize that section horizontally until it filled the frame in the correct proportions. This problem went away in later versions and I haven't thought of it since.

Tony, I'm not sure if this relates in any way to your issue. As a work-around, if no one is able to help, you might try estimating the percentage of shrink and try manually over-sizing the freeze frame in your project to see if it comes out about right in the export. I know it's clunky, but it may be your only option.

Thanks Dave...I'll try that one as a last resort.
I've used FF's a lot in the past, and never had a problem with them. It seems very strange.
I've eliminated one of the 3 FF's I had, and I might just live with the smaller freezes for the other two, unless I can solve this tomorrow. I have to deliver the dvd on Tuesday.
Thanks...

I solved the problem...
I created new project.
Inputted the original footage clips from DSR-11. Made the clips into FF's, saved as avi movie, then inserted the movie avi's back into the main project...Job done.

I still have no idea why they didn't work before :-8
