Premiere Elements 1.0 on Windows 8 Pro x64

Postby RJ Johnston » Tue Jan 15, 2013 1:19 am

I installed Premiere Elements 1.0 on my Windows 8 Pro 64-bit system and set the compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3, but then I had a problem when I went to run it. The program hung at the splash screen. The problems, according to the log file, are the GPU effects and transitions. After removing the "GPU" effects and transistions, PRE 1.0 started without any further problems. Capturing over firewire from my MiniDV camcorder worked, and burning a DVD with a menu worked. Next I had to try the SteadyMove Pro stabilizer that I paid $99 for, and that worked, except now it doesn't take all day to render. There are two project presets, DV Standard and Widescreen...now let me see? MP4 isn't recognized. Ah, the simpler times.

Ah, version 1. Life sure was simpler 10 years ago, wasn't it? Back in the days when miniDV was the ONLY format to shoot on and a Pentium HT was very fast computer!

So did you have a specific goal in mind RJ, or were you just playing around to see if it could be done? My first version was 2, and I do have it in storage but it's not installed on any of my machines. I can't imagine going back to it. I probably couldn't hardly find my way around it now. :)

IMHO version 2 was the best. I then moved to PPro and the transition was easy as there was so much similarity between PrEl and PPro versions (at that time at least).

I understand what you're saying. I've never used Pro, but I'll bet that V11's interface is even farther removed than ever (even though I like it). Would it be fair to say that Elements programs used to be like Pro with some of the feature sets removed? That's where the term "Elements" came from isn't it?

That would be my view, Dave; original PrEl was cut down PPro.

Well, it was a fun trip down memory lane, but I'll be sticking with version 11. I didn't see anything compelling in version 1 that would make me want to use it instead of version 11. Stabilizing with Steadymove Pro in version 1 was way slower than Mercalli in version 11 where I can get up to 150 fps or more. SteadyMove was going about 10 fps. I did find some sequences where Steadymove did a better job with nervous footage, so I might use it if Mercalli doesn't do a good job -- which is rare.
