Page Curl - blurry picture

Postby JP's » Sun Oct 09, 2011 12:42 pm

Hello everyone,

I have applied the page curl effect to a jpg still photo sized to 1000x750, scale to frame size unchecked, motion of jpg is from right to left over a SD video on track one.

When the effect is applied the picture is blurry. When the effect is removed the picture is clear. A test DVD was made to confirm the image quality.

I had this problem with another video and was never able to figure the solution.

Anyone have any suggestions.

Is the photo blurry with no motion background? I tried this out in v3 and looks fine. Can you post a screen shot?

Yes.

I have turned off each property (motion, opacity, color balance, page curl) one at a time and only the page curl effect affects the image.

Maybe I used the wrong terminology - blurry - maybe a better term would be pixelated.

I will try to get a screen shot tonight ( if I can figure out how ).

Thank You,
James

Sometimes the stacking order of the applied effects will change things. But since you turned off the color balance fx and still getting the pixelation I am stumped. A screen shot would be good.

This might be a problem with version 4, I have it installed on my old laptop and will have to check it out later tonight when I get home.
Will try it with version 10 and see what happens, any chance you could upload the photo in question so I could try it with the same file?

I don't see a page curl effect or transition in version 10 at all. Is this an effect or a transition? Are you sure it is called Page Curl?

Chuck, he is using v4. I tried it in v3 and the page curl effect looks fine. The edges are a little jagged, but not the whole image.

This must be an effect that was removed at some point, could be because of this problem that they removed it.

It's one of the gpu accellerated effects, Chuck. I believe you said those were removed.

Thanks Bob.
Yup, those were removed in version 8 I think.

Probably best to just find another effect that works for you and see if you still have the pixelation problem.

That was my solution in the previous project.

Here is the photo in question

I don't know how to do a screen capture.

That's ok JP we can help you with the screen capture if necessary. We can use this photo to test but I have to get on my other computer that has versions 3 and 4 to test it out. Will let you know if I get the same results.

I looked it up (screen capture).

Always wondered what that button was for.

Glad to see that you figured out the screen capture :) The image is a little small to really see what is going on but you do have the right idea. Looks like you put both shots into a photo editing program and didn't get them stretched to fit the canvas, not a big deal.

I tried version 3 and got the exact same results as you. Even exported the image, stretched to 10 seconds on the timeline, as a video and then imported the video and replaced the still image with that, same problem.
It seems to have a lot to do with the advanced settings for the Page Curl Effect. If you change the light direction and some of the other settings it gets better but not perfect.

I'm wondering if this would be a problem if the image was larger as I can't zoom in very far or it starts to pixelate without any effects applied. I used a much larger image and that didn't make any difference either.

I then tried an actual video clip, that ended up looking the same as the still images. It is more of a blur than it is pixelated, at least that's how it looks to me.

Also tried this in version 7 with the same results. However, when I used a high definition video clip in a HDV project the blurring wasn't hardly noticeable at all, so that is interesting.

Cheryl says that it worked correctly in version 3 and I can confirm that the blurring is very slight in version 3.
My guess is that a slight adjustment to the advanced settings of the effect would fix that too.

You might want to just give up on this effect as it really has problems, Adobe doesn't even include this one with the program anymore. There is probably a plug in or some other way to get that effect, maybe someone here knows how to do it or has done it before.

Thank You for your help!

In the previous project I tried everything I could think of and could not clear it up.

This time I remembered to ask the experts for help.

On a side note, I used the page curl effect to rotate around a image only curling about 45%. It is a little hard to explain but looks like the edges are rolling around the image and the image was clear. :-k

I will think of something else.

Thank You Again,
James
