Blurry still images in Premier Elements 3.0

Postby AdobeDummy » Tue Sep 27, 2011 2:20 pm

I would like to add several still images to a video project I am making. I haven’t had any difficulty adding photographs or video, however when I add the still images (which are screen shots from another computer) they are very blurry! When I click on the image itself, however, it appears clear. Any tips on how to improve the quality of the images when they are in the video? I have basic familiarity with Premier Elements 3.0 but anything beyond the initial tutorial is above my head! I don’t currently have any photo editing software but could get access to Adobe Photoshop. Some basic information follows:
.
Software: Adope Premier Elements 3.0
Computer: Dell Optiplex 760
OS: Windows XP Professional
Still image:
.bmp file (same problem even if I convert to .jpg)
1.92 MB
Width: 904 pixels
Height: 746 pixels
Resolution: 96 dpi
Bit depth: 24

Thank you!

Hello and welcome to Muvipix :meet:

My first suggestion would be to go into preferences and uncheck "Scale to Frame Size".
My guess is that you are blowing the images up too much, but that is just a guess.

What is your project setting?
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Thanks for the warm welcome. :-D

I unclicked the "scale to frame size" and it really helped for two of the files, but one stlil remains blurry. Interestingly, changing that preference increased the size of the blurry file.

These are the project settings (I didn't pick them on purpose...):
General edit mode: DV NTSC
29.97 frames/seconds
video 720 height/480 width
pixel aspect ratio: D1/DV NTSC (0.9)
30 fps drop frame time
DV capture

Appreciate it!

If it helped for two but not the third then the size of that image must be different.
Either that or the image is blurry to begin with.

Do you know how to use the Clip properties to scale the image down?
If you can scale the image down it will probably be a bit clearer.
You will need to test and see how small you have to get before the blurriness goes away.

Hello again,

The original image has good resolution so something seems to change when I put into adobe premier elements. I'm not sure how to use clip properties to scale it down, although when I edit the image (by dragging the corner of the image to reduce its overall size) in the project window, the resolution does not improve.

The image properties are:
Type: bitmap
File size: 1.9 MB
Image size: 904 x 746
Pixel depth: 32
Pixel aspect ratio: 1.0

Thanks!!!

And don't forget to render your timeline whenever a clip or still on your timeline has a red line above it!

To render the timeline, press Enter. When the red line turns green, you'll see a much cleaner version of your photo -- one that looks much more like your final output video will look.
