Correct way to post links to YouTube videos

Postby Ron Hunter » Sun Apr 19, 2015 1:30 pm

I see a "YouTube" button above the text entry field when I enter a new thread. However, when I paste the "shared" YouTube video info between the "YouTube" markers, the resulting thread never displays correctly. I end up simply pasting the complete address between "URL" markers.

What is the correct way to post a YouTube link in a Muvipix thread?

If you want to be able to display a YouTube video in your post you will need to click the "YouTube" button and place the address of the video between the YouTube tags that are created when you do that. The problem is knowing the correct format of the address that is needed.

The forum software wants an address that is in the original YouTube format. That is, it begins with the full YouTube URL beginning with "http" not "https", uses youtube.com not youtu.be, and ends with "/watch?v=id" where id is the YouTube video identifier. In the case of the Pug Life video, for example, that would be "bvlN8CY30IE". Note: http is optional. If omitted, http is implied.

Here's what it should look like in the edit pane of your post:

Code: Select all
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvlN8CY30IE[/youtube]

or

[youtube]www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvlN8CY30IE[/youtube]

And, here is what that will display:

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvlN8CY30IE[/youtube]

Thanks Bob! I'm using Firefox too and I had been pasting the YouTube "share" link that includes "you.be"... Now I know to copy the URL in the browser's address bar and paste that between the YouTube tags.

I've noticed that, if your http prefix is listed as https, the live link won't work. Remove the S and otherwise include the whole address and it will work. At least it does for me.

That doesn't work for me. Does it make a difference if the video URL is from a channel playlist?

Well, there is a universal (clunky) way to post youtube videos using an iFrame and I've created that button for it. When you want to embed a youtube video, select -

Share >> Embed >> then copy/paste the entire iFrame code:

Code: Select all
[youtube-iframe]<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/t-lkWssQrPU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>[/youtube-iframe]

There's usually a few more options with the "Show More" button.

(A lot of editing tricks in this video!)
