Best way to edit MPG4 files in PE7

Hi There:

What is the best way to handle and edit videos saved as MPG4 files? Should I convert them first to .avi files? If I did that, would there be a substantial quality loss?

Rudy,
Can you import the files into Premiere Elements without any problems?
If so then there is no need to convert them, just edit them directly.
