Chuck just gave me an idea about trying Microsoft's Fixit for audio.

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/audioplayback

It will tell you on the web page if your operating system is supported.

Sorry to hear that the driver update didn't work Donna :(

Please be sure that you have tried Peru's suggestion of trying headphones or different speakers, just to be sure it isn't a problem with the speakers or cable rather than anything else. Also, please make sure the speakers are turned on and plugged into the correct jack on the back of the computer ;)

If after that nothing is still working correctly then follow the instructions below...

Next thing you can do is go into Device Manager and uninstall all audio devices, then restart your computer.
Windows will automatically install the audio devices again with the best driver and hopefully fix the issue.
This can't make things any worse than they already are.

If you still don't have sound after that then there isn't much choice but to take it to a repair shop or get on the phone with HP support. Is the computer still under warranty?

Donna, I am sorry you are having trouble with your computer. Chuck gave you already all kind of good advise and I can't really add anything useful to it.
But just to make sure it is not anything really stupid, could you open your control panel again and click on Hardware and Sound, then Sound and make sure your Speakers are set as default like in the picture:

Capture2.JPG

I had the problem once, after I connected an external monitor via HDMI cable. The sound was switched to the external monitor, which has no speakers and it did not switch back automatically after I disconnected the monitor. Took me a while to figure out that one :pull:

Who would guess that plugging in a monitor could stop the audio from working !!
Thanks for the screen shots Gerlinde, hopefully that will help Donna :TU:

I'm used to something very similar with an HDMI connection. I sometimes connect my laptop to my A/V receiver via HDMI. When I do it switches the audio output automatically, but when I'm finished I have to go back in and manually set it back to the laptop's speakers.

OK. I did everyone the instructions from all the previous post. nothing worked. i checked it with 3 different sets of headphones and got nothing. so i ran advanced care system and now i have sound thru my headphones. don't know how or why that made a difference but i am sure one of you more technology literate people can explain it.. i don't have another set of speakers but what ever happened may have blown them out??? i don't know. but i can work with what i have.. i may go buy some more speakers and if they don't work, i can always take them back.. :exc: :exc:

that happy ending was short lived.. i really do believe i have lost it.. i took the pc to the geek squad who said the sound was disabled.. i have made sure it is enabled many times. they said it was fine so i bring iit home and nothing..... i am so frustrated right now. what i am doing wrong. i know i am slighty off my rocker right about now but this is crazy!! i have the jack plugged into the color cordinated plug in the back. i have tried all 6 of them and even bought new speakers in case they weren't working. i know it something i am not getting.. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

Go to your Start Menu and type "realtek" in your search window - open the Realtek HD Audio Manager (it should be on your system, I'm assuming).
