Burning DVDs from Blu-Ray Project in Encore CS3

Postby Chuck Engels » Sat Jun 14, 2008 7:02 pm

Hi Everyone :)

I am trying to complete my first High Definition wedding and get it ready for Encore.
I will need to burn the completed movie to one Blu-Ray disc and 7 DVDs.

I have exported the sequences from Premiere Pro as HDV MPEG 2 1920 x 1080, m2t video and wav audio files.
I have imported those files into my Encore project.

Encore is suppose to handle the down conversion pretty well. I have started a Hi Def project and when it comes time to build I can pick either the Blu Ray option or the DVD option, Encore is suppose to do the work.

I have been running into some issues with my testing and have solved some of them.
One issue is interlacing on the DVD burn, I think it was using the wrong transcoding settings so I changed them and am in the process of burning another.

What I am wondering if anyone has a better way or if I should create 2 Encore projects? Is HDV MPEG the best option for exporting from Pro? It is much faster that way that's for sure. Is 1 Pass VBR good enough or should I use 2 Pass VBR? Anything else anyone can think of that might save me some time would be appreciated, this is taking me way to long to figure out

I am having an interlacing issue with the DVD burns. The transcode settings are 1080i upper field first.
I am trying to export a DV-AVI (720 x 480 16:9)from the HDV Premiere Pro project to see how that looks in a Standard Def Encore Project.

Exporting the Standard Def DV-AVI files from the HDV project in Premiere Pro works fine.
I import those into a Standard Def Encore project and burn to DVD. The quality isn't quite as good but there is no interlacing issues.
For now I will export two sets of files from Premiere Pro, 1920 x 1080 HDV and 720 x 480 DV-AVI. Import into their respective projects in Encore and burn from there.

I have checked around and it looks like Encore CS3 should be able to handle this better, I must find the flaw in my workflow :-k

Is this another one of those self-help threads? :)

It might end up that way #-o

I know that Paul might have some answers but it is very early in the morning where he is.
Just trying to keep everyone informed of what I have tried and what works so far.

Ok, sorry. :( Wish I could help, but I have not cracked open Encore yet. I was amused that you almost had a working solution all by yourself, that's all. It must be late for me...

The only Blu Ray project that I have completed was a direct export from PPro CS3 into Encore CS3 and it worked OK. I then re-exported the timelines from PPro as AVIs to burn a SD DVD.

As you say, PaulLS may have an alternative as he has been using an HD workflow for longer than most of us here.

Thanks John, the AVI export is working fine, just double the work.
I am interested to find out how it is suppose to work, the product info for Encore says you can import once and then burn to DVD, Blu-Ray or Flash without even having to transcode the files again. Not working for me so far but I bet that I missed a few settings somewhere.

Hi Chuck, when I export HDV MPEG2 I use 25MB/s CBR... as this is the same as is captured from the camcorder. Can't really help with your interlace issue when burning a standard DVD I'm afraid, unfortunately I dont use Encore. As you say it is not optimal to have to export from PPro twice. Your problem is probably due to the fact that the HD MPEG2 is upper field first and for the standard definition DVD it is expecting lower field first. See this thread in the Encore forum:

Chuck,

Sorry I can't help, but I was looking around and found these 2 links with some suggestion for burning to Blu-Ray using Encore and PPro CS3. Maybe they might have something in there that can help you. Who knows, you probably already found these, anyway here they are. Hope they help a bit.

Thanks, I'll check them out. For now I am exporting two different formats of each sequence (6 sequences in all), then importing them into their respective Encore projects. There must be an easier way :-k

Hi,
I'd like to mention my own findings between the VBR1 and VBR2 pass. I have no experience as yet of the HDV format due to not wanting to run into problems such as yours when I am starting out.
I have recently done a few tests in this area as I wanted to know if spenind the extra time running the VBR2 pass was worth while. In short it wasn't.
My project was PAL widescreen Standard Def. I recorded the footage in HD and down converted when capturing onto PC.
The differences I found between the results were very marginal. The size of the exported file saved me approx 90MB from what I can remember. Hardly worth it unless you are desperate for space. The visual quality was ever so slightly better. Again imo not worth the extra time. I didn't pay much attention to the audio as I think this does not change? Either way I didn't notice any degradation.
Just to clarify I played my standard def DVD creations through an Xbox 360 using the HDMI output onto a 100hz 42inch flatscreen. I thought if I couldn't see much difference with this setup I would be fine.
I'm sure I will start to dable with the HD format once I get new PC.

I'll post up the adobe forum link where I carried out my tests when I'm in work. Using opera mini atm :)

EDIT: Unfortunatly the adobe forum has deleted the old forum threads when creating their new forum. So no reference. Sorry.
