I need some IT Help

Postby Maxine370 » Mon Jan 07, 2008 9:19 pm

I'm hoping there is someone who can help me with this issue/question.

I recently noticed my main drive has run way out of space...funny this is I haven't been doing a lot of video work in the last week. I haven't added any new video or saved any new projects or exported any AVIs etc. I have been doing a TON of Photoshop work.

I tried to restart thinking maybe it needed to reset temp files or something like that. Didn't work but I then checked to make sure that new files didn't get copied to my computer last time I rebooted the external hard drives. In doing a search for new/modifed files over the last week I came across a temp file with 35 GB in it.

this is the folder it is in...C:\Documents and Settings\Beth\Local Settings

Does anyone know if I can delete this file. Will it affect current projects I might be working on? Why has it all of a sudden started "filling up".

I appreciate any insights here. 35 GB is a lot of space to waste.

MANY MANY THANKS
PS... here are samples of some of the files within the temp folder

Those can be deleted. And thanks for reminding me about them. I have 5 files myself that I'm deleting.

My regular maintenance regiment will help keep your system clean of temp files and running like new, Beth.

Thanks a lot. I hate deleting anything that I don't know what it is but I couldn't understand why all of a sudden my c space was depleted. Does anyone know what could have caused this?

I also found a few obfustat viruses in my AVG virus vault. Could these be the problem? Anyone know what to do with them once they are in the vault?

There is a lot of contradictory information out there -- although it does seem to be a pretty serious trojan, and could account for your suddenly loss of space on your hard drive.

On the other hand, some reports say it's the result of running more than one anti-virus on your computer at teh same time. You're not doing that, are you?

But there's also this:

No just the AVg professional.

Does it being in the virus vault mean it didn't get through?

The virus is present on your system first, AVG finds the virus and puts it in the virus vault usually during a scan but as long as the control center is running it should find it right as soon as it hits. You can delete the files from the virus vault if you want to, but they are safe in there and won't harm your system anymore. A good question is where do you keep getting the same virus from? Did you notice when AVG found the viruses? It has big huge red letters that say 'THREAT FOUND'.

It found them back in October. In fact they were all on the same day.

But I don't recall what I might have been doing that day on the Internet or otherwise. I try not to use that computer for Internet transactions or downloads (except music). I have another computer that I use for that that has far less precious files on it.

As long as it is not hurting me any further i guess I will leave them in the vault.

Thanks Steve.

That Ccleaner restored about 40 gigs back to my C drive.
