Data Execution Prevention

Postby VernonRobinson » Thu Jan 03, 2008 9:34 pm

Ran into a problem. Through trial and error, it seems that when I open Windows Explorer in a directory that contains an MPEG file, the system crashes Windows Explorer with a Data Execution Prevention error. Anyone run into this error before?

I have tried a virus scan, AdAware, but still no relief. Luckily it seems to browse data directories ok, but seems to have some problem with the picture media files.

Thanks,
-Vernon

Here's a microsoft article on the error I think you're describing.

It still could be linked to a virus that there's no fix for yet.(don't know the chances of that though.)

Does this happen with every MPEG file? If so, it's probably linked to a shell extension you've installed (either knowingly or unknowingly) that provides right-click operations on these files - to view, open, edit etc.

I get this error occasionally when attempting to hibernate my PC - explorer crashes I restart it and carry on. As yet, I haven't managed to identify the offending piece of software. DEP exceptions can be linked to viruses or trojans but equally to badly written software as well.

I have a computer with a number of partitions running XP. I see the exact same thing on one partition. The computer is not connected to the internet so it is not a virus or trojan. I just turned off data execution prevention for windows explorer.
