hello all, hope everyone is well in these certainly difficult times. I used to have the Microsoft Word suite with Windows XP. I've been using Windows 10 now for a few years and wish I still had Word. Is there an inexpensive software that I can purchase that is like word but can use with Windows 10?
Thanks Richard

Not sure of the situation in the USA but in Europe there is a very competitive and fully legal market is used software licences.

It depends on where inexpensive starts and stops - but Word (and the other office apps) are available from Microsoft for subscription. You can install the latest desktop apps. Current price is $69.99/year or $6.99/month. There are occasionally deals. This also gives you 1TB of onedrive storage, 60 minutes of skype calls/month and some other stuff.

Do you still have the installation disc and key? Old versions of word still run on Windows 10.

I've got to toss in a pitch for my go-to, Open Office. It reads and writes Word docs, Excel and PowerPoint. And it's free free free!

I used OpenOffice for years starting back before it had been transferred to Apache. It's a solid office suite, but hasn't been getting the developer support it used to. Latest update is version 4.1.7 released last September. LibreOffice is very similar to Apache OpenOffice as both are basically descendants from the original OpenOffice.org code base. But currently LibreOffice has much more development activity (probably the most active of all the open source Office suites) and has more features. Latest update about a month ago (early adopter version 6.4.2 and the more mature version 6.3.5). At this point in time, I would recommend LibreOffice over OpenOffice. Both are free.

Thanks, Chuck. To be fair, you can't go wrong with either one of them. They're both solid office suites. The reason I'm advocating LibreOffice is that along with the active and robust developer support, it has the most potential. There's an interesting licensing issue that plays into that. While both are open source products, the licences are different. LibreOffice can incorporate new code from Apache OpenOffice, but OpenOffice cannot incorporate new code from LibreOffice. OpenOffice would need to develop those new features from scratch. I think you can see where this is heading. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
