update with updates off

Postby Peru » Thu Oct 12, 2017 10:46 am

I had an odd thing happen this morning when I booted my Windows 7 computer. My Links toolbar on the taskbar was missing. I right clicked on the taskbar and it was locked as I had it set, but the Links toolbar was unchecked, so I checked it.

It restored the toolbar, but my links were gone, so I went to do a System Restore. I found a restore point from two days ago (I didn't have the computer turned on yesterday.) which showed a Windows Update. But I have Windows Update turned off! I checked the settings and it was off.

I did the System Restore and all is now OK, but why would it have done an update if the updates were turned off?

From what I understand, [what Microsoft deems] critical/security updates will still happen if your computer is connected to the internet.

Not sure about the task bar issue, though.
