Preview on a TV while editing

Postby jackfalbey » Thu Nov 29, 2007 4:02 pm

I like being able to use my camcorder as a pass-through to preview in real-time on a TV while editing in Premiere. I can see exactly what the finished project will look like on my client's TV set. However, I don't like having the camcorder tied up for this purpose. Is there another way to get TV output from my PC while editing in Premiere? A TV tuner card, maybe, or Pyro A/V? All the products I can find on the web are more concerned with getting analog signals into a PC, not out to a TV. I want to make sure I can do this before I buy another piece of equipment...

Thanks in advance for the advice! :-D

That is one of the reasons I love my Pyro Link :)

You could also buy a cheap MiniDV camcorder with passthrough, but the Pyro can be had for around $140.

Wow, Talk about a fast reply!!! So, the Pyro does allow analog output to a TV?

I have a 14" Toshiba TV/monitor connected to my Pyro all the time, I can watch all of my edits on the TV.
I never have text that goes off of the viewable area, no problems at all when you can see the results as you work, great piece of equipment :)

I have a Panasonic 24" TV next to my desk... it's great for checking focus, color, brightness, etc. compared to the small preview window in Premiere, and I can also check for field order issues.

Now, if Dell would just start carrying the Pyro again...

Would any of these work?

No, the ouput from the computer is via Firewire... so you need a DV to analogue converter.

I wouldn't touch any of them myself Jack, others may have a different opinion.

I have heard nothing but horror stories about Turtle Beach video products, and not much better about WinTV cards.
I highly recommend the Pyro Link or any of the Canopus converters.

For a standard-definition Timeline this works beautifully.

I have both the Pyro Link and the DataVideo DAC-100. With the Pyro I can feed any DVD through my DVD players component output into the component input of the Pyro. A marvelous capability for such a low priced device.

For a high-definition Timeline you may have to look elsewhere.

Chuck I also use a 14 inch Toshiba TV/monitor using my camera as a pass through but if I let things rest for a little while the text will start to skew a little.
It will tip a few degrees on the TV/monitor. But it doesn't happen on the PE2.0 monitor.

When I first stated using this setup I was worried it would look like that on my finished DVD.
DVDs were fine.
It happens every time but I'm used to it now.
Thanks
Richard

You may have a developing problem with your Pyro. Wouldn't be the first time. ADS Tech has very good support.

Looks like the 14 inch Toshiba is popular. I sure have enjoyed having mine. It sits right between the wife's PC and mine - most of the time we watch the satellite news channels on it. It's useless for previewing HDV but I still do mostly DV work, so it stays.

Hi Ken, Jack doesn't have a Pyro yet he is using his camcorder.

Well, I was responding to Richard but I see he is using a camcorder passthrough, also. I suppose the A/D converter in the camcorder could be developing a problem.

Titles used to be notorious for high frequency artifacts but I haven't heard much complaint about PC generated titling. Richard, have you tried using an alternate video input to your TV?
