Question re HDMI port

Postby George Tyndall » Sun Apr 23, 2017 10:17 am

I'm getting a bad connection between my machine and my HDTV. Changing the cable gives the same result; therefore, it appears the problem lies with the port.

Question: does repairing this involve changing the motherboard, or is it less complicated than that?

Thank you.

Some ports on some computers can be replaced. Not sure about yours. Can you try another HDMI port or another HDMI port on another different computer? That would be the best way to find out if your original HDMI port was the culprit.

I am also assuming that you tried all the HDMI inputs on the TV. My Panasonic has 4 HDMI inputs for example.

You say you got a "bad connection". No picture? Static? Sound? Intermittent picture? What?

If your HDMI port on your computer turns out to be bad you and you have a USB 3.0 connection on your computer you can always get a USB 3.0 to HDMI converter.

I agree that you need to confirm which end is causing problems, computer or TV, if you haven't already done that. Is this a desktop or laptop? A laptop would have the HDMI connector as part of the motherboard. A desktop HDMI port is probably on your video card.

TreeTop, Sidd and Dave,

It's the port at the rear of my PC. If the cable is not seated "just right," then there is no picture.

I'm pretty sure the port is NOT on the motherboard but on a video card--I should have looked before asking, thus the blushing icon for this post.

Thanks for your replies.
