No issues..

Postby BuddyB » Mon Jan 16, 2017 1:09 pm

..just a couple of thoughts. With help my audio issues are over. I believe I will get a preamp for the turntable. It will blast me away through the headphone jack, but is a wee bit lacking in the computer; not badly but would like it a bit stronger for better control, say in Audacity. The other question is, when using "WhatYouHear" through Creative I'm just a bit short of where I'd like to be with recording volume in Audacity. I haven't seen anything, at this point, online about amps or preamps for the basic volume you can get out of Win10. Any thoughts in this area appreciated.

Hi Buddy,

The turntable should already have a preamp, I don't think adding another will be any help and will probably sound terrible. Are you looking at the audio wave in Audacity? Does it not peak like it should even with the input turned all the way up? Audacity has an effect that will increase the volume but I am thinking there is something else that is the real problem. You should be able to get excellent levels with your turntable and only need to make minor adjustments with Audacity.

Well never mind. All of a sudden the volume is fine. I can't tell if I've done anything or not, but it's good. Thanks again Chuck.

The only reason I can think of where you might need a preamp is if your turntable has a connection for a ground wire, which a simple audio mixer would be able to connect to (acting as your preamp).
I DJ'ed for about 10 years, half of that was on vinyl using turntables - all of which had a ground connection. With the newer ones like yours, however, they may not have this requirement.

Thanks Kent, makes sense. There is no obvious ground connection I can see or be aware of, just RCA stereo out and a non-working USB port that will not function with WIn10.
