Questions re throughput

Postby George Tyndall » Fri Jul 22, 2016 5:17 pm

USB 2.0 tops out at 480Mbps, glacial compared to the 5 Gbps of USB 3.0. You'll never get exactly that 5Gbps throughput, since a) it's shared among the multiple ports connected to the same USB host controller, and b) many devices themselves aren't capable of reaching that level of throughput (spinning hard drives are a prime example).

Questions

1) Does that statement mean that, when backing one USB 3.0 external HDD up to an identical twin, I should first dismount all other external HDDs for maximum throughput, even if the others are idle?

2) Will use of SmartSyncPro to perform the backup likely be faster than dragging folders from one drive to the other?

Thank you.

Not necessarily, although I suppose it wouldn't hurt. The key words to embrace are "up to". Meaning that while a particular component (such as your USB 3.0 ports on your computer) is capable of UP TO 5Gbps, the components connected to it, such as hard drives or other USB devices, may not be until succeeding generations of that product are released with higher speed capabilities that take advantage of your USB 3.0's speed throughput. Since everything is essentially Frankensteined together, not every piece you connect is going to be capable of identical speeds - there's going to be a bottleneck in there somewhere.

You're correct!

With the 4 other USB 2.0 HDDs mounted but idle, throughput from C to external USB 3.0 HDD "A" was about 70Mbps

With the 4 other USB 2.0 HDDs now dismounted:, throughput from C to identical external USB 3.0 HDD "B" is currently about 70Mbps

This is good to know as it would be cumbersome to need to dismount HDDs each time I wish to run a backup,

:whew:

SSP does not inform the Mbps but it does state that to sync the 228GB folder on the C drive to "B" is projected to take over six hours; dragging that 228GB folder to "A" was projected to take about 3 hours.

Here's an interesting article discussing the variations in performance of USB 3 devices.

Yes,. very interesting indeed. Thanks for sharing that.

:TU:

Unfortunately, CPU-Z reveals I have the following motherboard rather than the upgradable ASUS version that is discussed in the article

However, given the manner in which the components in my system function so well together, I can live with the throughput limitations. I can always find something else to do while waiting for my backups to complete.

Thanks again for enlightening me.
