External Back up problem

Postby momoffduty » Mon Feb 08, 2016 10:33 am

I have a couple of Buffalo 2 TB externals for back up that I rotate. I formatted the external to do a complete backup of my D drive. The D drive has 416 GB of free space of 1.81 TB. The external after formatting shows 1.81 TB of space. The back up failed due to insufficient space on the external. The external now shows 1.38 TB of free space of the 1.81 TB space. There is a file from the backup, but is empty.

Is your drive formatted NTFS (rather than FAT32)?

You can run an Error Check on the drive and see if it finds any issues, what back up software are you using?

Using EaseUS for the backup.

That's what I use also, don't remember ever having that problem unless the drive really didn't have the space. Can you try creating a new backup with just a few files and see if that works? Make sure that the destination drive is the correct one (I'm sure you have but never hurts to double check).

UPDATE: Success on the 2nd attempt of back up. I formatted the drive again and then ran a Disc Clean. Not sure if that did the trick, but a stab in the dark. I also unchecked a few unneeded folders such as my Cache files. I don't know if this makes a difference: first time I just selected "D" drive. The 2nd time I checked folders on the D drive.
