The tool liked to in the article does the job very well. It allows you to remove the prompts whilst still keeping windows updates active.

I have done this on computers that my children access and my media centre pc (there is no windows media centre in windows 10)
Intel Core i7 8700 - 32GB DDR4 - 500GB Evo 970 SSD - 3+2 TB HDD - GTX 1080- MSI Z370 Pro - Win10 64 bit - Cannon HV30 (PAL) - Sony A6000 - GoPro 3 Black

It might be time to give up the fight, my friends.

More and more I'm troubleshooting video editing issues for people who simply refuse to give up Windows 7 or even Windows 8. Things will be so much easier once all PC users are on the same OS.

If your computer isn't compatible with Windows 10 for some reason, I understand. But I think it may be time to quit fighting the future on principle alone.

In my not so humble opinion anyway...

I felt that way before I finally realized that Windows 7 was better than XP.
Now I'm wondering about W10. :ha:

For what it's worth, Microsoft is certainly betting the future of the company on it.

I kind of agree with you Steve. New products will be invented that are not backward compatible and they will become the standard. Regardless of our distaste for the future it will be coming. That being said I also like to give windows 10 a chance to get the kinks worked out and then install. But I will install it.

There was a big push back when Windows 7 was on the horizon and XP was the darling that was fading. No system will be perfect.

It is similar from moving from MPEG2 to H.264 and maybe to H.265. It reminds me of the Greek philosopher Heraclitus.

There's no doubt whatsoever that anyone who thinks that they will resist Windows 10 forever will lose that battle. There will be limited alternative choices: change to an Apple product, downgrade to a simple tablet, go to Linux, quit using computers, etc. For those of us who use computers seriously for business and hobby the only real alternative is Apple, and that would be a major change for most people who have a vested interest in Windows programs and its environment.

I went to Win 10 on my laptop as soon as it was released. I've been using it for some time now and I still have a dislike for it. I dislike it because I find the user interface to be cumbersome, and Microsoft won't allow enough modification of the interface to change that. I dislike having no control over when updates are installed, and not being able to turn off a particular update if it causes me problems. I dislike that Microsoft has no respect for users' privacy and even if one digs far enough to apply the privacy settings that do exist, some settings are uncontrollable. I have serious worries that as time goes on this will become gradually worse and worse.

But most of all I dislike Microsoft's arrogance. I dislike having Windows 10 being pushed down my throat. I dislike being pressured into making the transition when Microsoft decides, instead of when I feel the time is right. I'm of a generation and mindset that doesn't take well to this type of behavior, whether it's from a corporation or an individual.

The Win 10 operating system is solid, and all else being equal I would welcome it. But for the time being my work machine is going to stay Windows 7 until I just have no other reasonable choice.

Good thing you're not a Mac user, Dave! When Apple introduced OSX, none of their OS9 computers would run on it, so you had to buy all new equipment. Then, when Apple started using Intel processors, they started building an operating system that would not run on the old chips. And anyone who's bought an iPhone or other i-product knows that, after a couple of years, your hardware is locked out of iOS updates, so your device gets really buggy and none of your apps work right and you have to buy a new one.

At least Microsoft isn't charging us for the privilege of having progress pushed down our throats. ;)

None of the above makes me feel any better about what Microsoft is doing and, as Gordon said, just because the puppy is free doesn't make it a good thing. It's only progress if the changes are in our best interest. Some are, some aren't. Your points about Apple are well taken, but that's not peculiar to Apple. It's the nature of our throw-away technology today. Changes come so fast that perfectly good hardware is obsolete long before it wears out. BTW, I do have an iPhone. On my third one in 5 1/2 years. :)

As far as software goes we only purchase a license, we don't buy the software and actually own it or the code behind it. Microsoft owns the software and it is there company so I feel they have the right to run their business any way they see fit. If we don't like the way they do things then we need to come up with a new operating system to give them, and Apple, some competition. Competition is always the best way to accomplish change in the industry, in my opinion :)

I have switched all of my computers except one to Windows 10 and have been very happy with the results overall. I think my favorite version of all was Windows 97 and couldn't ever see having to upgrade, but we have multiple times now.

It is a battle of the OS keeping up with technology, this will go on forever. It is not all the fault of Apple or Microsoft, it is a changing environment that they have to work in. Yes they drive a lot of that themselves but you can't continually build new technology on old software, or hardware for that matter, that is called Windows ME or VISTA :)

There was a Windows 95 and a Windows 98. Which were you referring to, Chuck?

Here's my solution, Steve:

My wife loves her $220 Win10 machine that comes with a tiny 32GB SSD.

I'm going to buy one for my online needs and take my Win7 machines offline.

If I need a music track, a video clip or anything else from online for my slide shows, then I will download them to an external drive attached to the $200 Win10 machine and then move them to my Win7 machines for use.
