Audio Issue

Postby BuddyB » Thu Dec 17, 2015 5:50 pm

I have Win10 installed and all of a sudden my driver does not allow me to record, and Via doesn't have a driver update for 10. It's built into my Asus Mb, so I believe I need to acquire a new one. Need some suggestions. With the current Mb I can get sound, but no longer record. When it was working and I wanted to record I had to mute the speakers and then go in and change back for playing audio..kind of a pain. I have Skype and it doesn't work with it. I can receive audio and see the party on the other end. I need to do both, so I'm in the market. Suggestions appreciated.

The "no cost" option is to go back to Win 7/8 whichever you were using previously.

I am no expert on these things (pace Bob) but if you are thinking of a mobo replacement will that work without the need to replace other components too?

What exactly are you recording into, Buddy? (I assume we're talking about audio recording.)

Is it a microphone plugged into a microphone input or a USB microphone plugged into a USB port?

It's very likely Windows 10 will support any USB microphone, if the problem is that your audio board isn't supported.

Or you can try installing the appropriate RealTek High Def Audio Codec.

I'm recording into the computer, both offline and sometimes with the mic. The mic is plugged into a standard 1/8" pin plug mic jack at the audio card board. 'Two' at the moment I'm not thinking of replacing the Mb just the audio card, mainly because I've done that before, plus I've always been told built-in cards are not the best. However, I'm like Nashville musicians in that respect, if it sound OK/commercial I live with it.

As I said, Buddy, using a USB microphone will save you replacing the audio card -- but it's your call. If you're like me, you welcome any opportunity to pull your computer apart. ;)

You're absolutely correct!! :) I've not just loved that card, so I'll probably shop for one. Thanks Steve.

Via and Realtek are the two most common chipsets included on motherboards. Each requires their own specific driver. The drivers aren't built into the motherboard, the chipsets are. The drivers are software modules installed into the operating system and may be preloaded into the Windows distribution. Driver updates are generally supplied by the manufacturer and may also be distributed through Windows Update. Windows 10 is more heavy handed than earlier releases and has been overwriting drivers you download and install with the version distributed using Windows Update and that has been causing problems. I've seen reports that Windows 10 is having problems with drivers for both via and realtek chipsets. Skype is also having issues with Windows 10. Microsoft really needs to get on top of this.

If you buy a separate audio card, check to make sure that it is compatible with Windows 10.
