I haven't found much information on that specific error. You can think of 0x80080005 as an "access denied" message. Usually this is a permissions issue and can appear on almost any action depending on what's being accessed. This specific error context appears to relate to the system protection function. If system protection isn't working, you won't be able to create automatic restore points when you apply updates.

If you haven't already, turn on system protection for the C drive. Then, see if you can manually create a restore point.

Please see the attached image.

I never make any changes to my system without first manually creating a Restore point, even for Windows updates which tend to create one automatically as shown here.

Is that also your practice, or are you confident that Windows will always do it automatically?

P.S. If you have time, please check my reply to RJ Johnston above to verify that I am not misinforming him regarding TI updates.

Here is the catch 22: Because you cannot perform a Restore from the backup that you created with the previous version, there is no way to go back to where you were with Acronis .

That's not quit correct. Acronis is backwards compatible for restores -- you can restore from a backup made by an earlier version. See this backup archive compatibility KB article.

I wouldn't say don't update. However, before applying an update, be sure to look at the Acronis support forum for that version to see if anyone is reporting problems with that update.
