Really bizarre Safe Mode happening..

Postby BuddyB » Wed May 28, 2014 4:18 pm

..blows my mind. On Bonnie's laptop, a Toshiba, when I go in to Safe Mode to clean it up, I will run say Malwarebytes. I start the scan and within 5 mins the computer shuts off. I can run Malwarebytes and the others in Windows with no problem and they root out the little buggers. I can't tell if there's something I'm missing or not. Any thoughts appreciated. :conf:

You sure the computer is really shutting off or maybe just the screen saver kicking in?

I wouldn't expect the screen saver to run in Safe Mode.

What version of Windows, Buddy?

It is Win7/32, and I'm not sure the screen saver is not kicking in, but moving the mouse or track pad doesn't kick it back in.

Check the power option settings in the control panel. You may have it set to sleep after 5 minutes of no keyboard activity. Also, be sure you are running on ac power while running the clean up.

The MBAM site recommends not running it in Safe Mode:
Unless otherwise directed always run MBAM in normal mode. MBAM is not designed to find all infections when in safe mode. Safe mode will not always load all infection components. If our software will not run in normal mode, even using Chameleon, then you can try safe mode.

However, when infections do prevent purging malware in normal mode I've had good results with a two-pronged process of first running multiple anti-malware programs (including Malwarebytes) in Safe Mode. After everything comes back clean I boot into normal mode and start all over again, including Malwarebytes. Patience is key. Running Malwarebytes in Safe Mode may not normally be indicated, but it does have its place.
