USB2.0 Port Issue

Postby BuddyB » Tue Apr 29, 2014 12:33 pm

This is an area I've not had an issue with before. My wife Bonnie always forgets to click before removing an item from the port. Win7/32: Two of her three USB ports no longer function. Is there anything I can do to revive them or are they permanently gone? I've always heard that if you don't click they will go bad. I'm hoping reloading the drivers, or something will correct that. I've even forgotten to to click some, but have never had an issue until one of my granddaughters tried to force a connection in with the plug upside down. Thoughts always appreciated.

If there is no physical damage to the port, you can try disabling the USB controllers in Device Manager and restart the computer. It will reload the default drivers.

I hope Peru's suggestion works for Bonnie.

With one USB plug still working you may be able to add a USB hub. There are lots of them available. Keep in mind that some components must be plugged directly into a 'main' hub.

If that doesn't work well for you, it may be possible to add a USB Port card. Here is an example that requires you have an available PCIe slot and a "moled" power connector, whatever that is.

I have had this happen to me. I just restart the computer and it reloads all the usb drivers. When I restart the computer I wait until everything boots up before I plug in any external USB drives.

I did all that and all I get is Unknown Driver. I think it needs a new and I'm not sure where to get. I've disable/enabled and rebooted but it still shows Unknown.

sometimes if you plug the USB device into a different USB port that might help.

Basically it's a USB mouse, 1 out of 3 USB ports will accept it. She can get along with that, but I'd like to correct the issue with the other two USB ports.

I had a problem like this some months ago. At the same time Windows Explorer was playing up. The remedy was a repair install of Windows following which all was well again.
AMD Ryzen 3900x 12C/24T, ASUS x570 mobo, Arctic Liquid Freezer ll 280, Win11 64 bit, 64GB RAM, Radeon RX 570 graphics, Samsung 500GB NVMe 980 PRO (C:), Samsung 970 Evo SSD (D:), Dell U2717D Monitor, Synology DS412+ 8TB NAS, Adobe CS6.
