Thanks John for the suggestion. It is mind boggling that 6T is here.

I formatted the external and boy was that quick! Just a second or two. Backing up now using Easus. At 1.4T this will take awhile. Thanks for everyone's help.

Back up successful! Now, when I try to use the Eject safely I get a message the device is still in use and to close applications. The Easus window has been closed. Thoughts?

I've had this happen with some externals and flash drives. You can either go to Computer Management > Disk Management and right click > eject or just shut down the computer, remove the drive, and restart. You can also use Process Explorer to see what is accessing the drive. There can be many reasons for it not releasing, including a defrag program working in the background.

Sometimes it's just not worth the effort to track down why. Just shut down and remove and restart. ;)

I agree with Bob, Cheryl, shutting down and restarting is the easiest way to go. I believe this is a bug in Windows. I had the problem all the time with Win XP and also Win 7. After switching to Windows 8.1 I have not seen this happening again on both of my computers.
