Recommendation for new monitor?

Postby Ron Hunter » Wed Jan 08, 2014 12:40 pm

I have a 19" LCD Asus monitor and I would like to upgrade to a larger monitor. I would like a 27" monitor but I understand that 1920x1080 screen resolution is met with a 24" monitor, and that the larger screen size can make things slightly blurry at that resolution. In other words:
1920x1080 on 24" monitor = outstanding quality (sweet spot)
1920x1080 @ 27" monitor = good but not as good as 24"

Is my understanding flawed?

Monitor is used primarily for video editing, photo editing, and general purpose use. Budget is $350 or less. My PC's video card (NVidia GeForce GT420) can support resolution up to 2560x1600. I see that most companies only offer 1yr warranty but Asus offers 3yr warranty.

What monitor would you recommend?
Desktop: HPE-580T, i7-950 (3.07GHz), 16GB RAM, Win'7 64-bit Home Premium, PSE12/PRE12, Lightroom 5.
Laptop: MacBook Pro (retina), 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5.
Cameras (in use): Panasonic GH4/Canon HFR400/Canon HV30, GoPro HD Hero2.

Well, obviously the bigger the monitor and the higher the resolution, the more room you've got to work -- which is something I never seem to have enough of, even with two monitors!

I can't imagine that any program's interface would look blurry on a bigger monitor. Even your 1920x1080 video should look pretty good on a bigger screen.

So I can't imagine a downside to having a higher resolution monitor.

Here's a PC Magazine article that walks you through the considerations for choosing an lcd monitor: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2362046,00.asp

Steve's right,"the bigger the monitor and the higher the resolution, the more room you've got to work." The problem is that if you keep to 1920x1080 as you increase the screen size, the resolution isn't higher, it's the same. You aren't increasing the work area. Increasing the size magnifies the image and the flaws -- it will look less sharp. That may be fine if you are viewing from a little further away. For example, my 1920x1080 52" HDTV looks great from the recommended viewing distance, but looks awful from a couple of feet away. I wouldn't expect a huge difference between a 24" and a 27" though. Take a look in a store where you can compare them side by side. Some monitors have extra processing to compensate. LG, for instance, has a feature on some of their monitors they call "super resolution", it's the same 1920x1080 resolution, but the image has been processed to increase the apparent sharpness. Personally, I'd be wary of that if I use that monitor for photo editing.

I would recommend that you consider getting a monitor with an IPS panel. IPS panels can be viewed from a wider angle without darkening or color shifting. Your head viewing position and angle will be less critical than with a standard TN panel.

A brief resurrection of this thread. :-D

One of my aged (seven years old?) Samsung 19" 1280x1024 monitors has finally gone to that monitor graveyard in the recycling bin. Trying to manage PPro with a single monitor system, having enjoyed the use of dual monitors for so long, is proving really difficult so I need to acquire a replacement sooner rather than later.

This monitor caught my eye - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/monitors ... sus-pb287q but before I rush in to where angels fear to tread I will be pleased to receive any input/advice. I am aware that I will also need a new video card if I decide to go down this route which likely means a significant total spend so any cheaper alternatives to consider will also be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Will the enlarged screen 'real estate' be better than dual monitors?...or should I just get a 1980x1080 replacement for what I had? No one have any words of wisdom?

I'm not a "power editor" like others here but I have no regrets about my 27" monitor. I went from dual 19" monitors to a single 27" monitor and love it!

Of course, I'm also happily editing video on my 13" MacBook Pro laptop, so maybe I'm not a good person to chime in here? :-D

At Christmas last year Sam's club had a great deal on IPS monitors. But, after researching not all IPS monitors are actually true IPS. Forgot now what the difference was. Maybe some of the tech members could elaborate?
