Problem with eSATA port?

Postby Gerlinde » Sat Dec 15, 2012 2:05 pm

I use a ASRock Z79 Extreme motherboard with my new computer. I chose it because it has a firewire port. As an added bonus, it also has a eSATA port. I was excited because I have a 1gb FreeAgent extreme external hd that I used before with my notebook. Connected via an expresscard eSATA cable I used it as 2nd HD for video editing. It works great on my notebook, but very disappointing on my new rig.
File transfer speed is very slow with eSATA, actually slower than with firewire connection. I did a test and tranfered a 3.6 gb DVD folder from the drive to the new computer's internal hd and it took 2min. If I connect the drive via eSATA to my notebook, the same file is transferred in 1min. When I connect the drive via firewire to the new computer, file transfer speed is equal or slightly faster than eSATA.
I also noticed, that file transfer starts out fast, but then slows down to nothing, sits there for a while at 0 bits and then resumes all of a sudden.
I searched the internet back and forth, but can not find anything related to this mobo or Windows 8. I guess this is what I get for being too progressive and using a new OS on a new system build.
Windows 8 does not seem to be as supportive of legacy devices as I hoped for. The firewire drivers provided with Win 8 are also causing some problems, but that will be another topic.

I think I solved my problem. I tried a different cable and voilà... now it is working. :exc: It is weird though, the same cable works fine with my laptop. :conf:

Glad you got it worked out Gerlinde. How is the new build coming along? All set up?

Thanks Cheryl.

Yes, everything is setup and works great. I have a couple of miner annoying things, like the eSATA not working and also some problems with Firewire. Windows 8 does provide drivers for things like that, but they are not working with everything. But so far I have been able to get it to work. It would be nice if you would not have to search for workarounds. I'm still trying to get a handle on all my storage devices, how to organize things.

I have not done any video editing beyond capturing from my camera and a quick tryout of my new versions of Avid Studio, MAGIX MEP and Premiere 11. I burned a couple of DVDs from stuff I had recorded from cable TV. WOW, that went fast. 90min of footage in a little more than 10mins. I cut out commercials and burned 5 shows in one evening. That would take a couple of evenings with my laptop. :-D

How is your new toy working out?

Things sure are fast now! A 3 min AE segment with lots of layers & .mov files, time remapping, fx, etc. took 45 min to 1 hour on the old machine. On the new build it took 6 min. AE gave an estimated time when it started rendering and I didn't believe it so I watched and it did take only 6 min.!

In Bridge I batch process photos from jpeg to psd and resize for AE. Usually this takes about 3 or 4 seconds each, but with the new build it was flashes of light. I had to look away because it was like a stobe effect. :ha:

It has been a tad frustrating since W7 is different and Word. I upgraded PrPro & AE to CS6 and while AE is pretty much the same PrPro is different. I was hunting around a bit on a rush project I had 2 weeks ago. Nothing like being in a hurry to add to the confusion.

The grand daughter was in a preK Christmas program the other night and I used HV-split to capture. Brought that 4 min footage into PrPro and it whipped out a H.264 file for me to post on FB. It took 1.5 hours to upload to FB, now if my internet connection would be as fast as the new SSD then I would be really happy!

The good news is that with CS6 AE & PrPro, ACR now recognizes my DSLR Raw files and I don't have to convert to DNG. The bad news is that if I want to use the File>Place>in PS I have to use the Bridge that came with CS5. So sorta a work around to open a different version of Bridge.

I would like to know what you decide on backup system. I haven't decided how I want to handle things. I may use the old computer's 2nd drive for an increment backup (1.5T) and maybe get a new external. The old external drive is only 1T.

Place in Photoshop works in Bridge CS6 for me. What problems are you having with Bridge CS6 that it doesn't work???

Bob, I have Bridge CS6 that came with AE & PrPro CS6. I have PS CS5. So, in Bridge CS6 my only option for File>Place>in After Effects. Photoshop is not listed since it is CS5. I would like to use CS6 Bridge for all 3 programs.

I understand now. There is a work around of sorts. If you open PS CS5 and then open Bridge CS6, it will attempt to use the open version of Photoshop. Open works fine, but Place does not. However, if you have a file open in Photoshop CS5, you can drag a file from Bridge CS6 and drop it on the open file in Photoshop CS5 and it will do a Place.

Thanks Bob. Yeah, guess it is only a minor thing. I'll try as you suggest.
