WMP Crash

Postby Bobby » Sun Nov 11, 2012 2:07 pm

Not sure when the problem started happening, but Windows Media Player completely hangs my PC at the END of playing a video file. Total hang, no mouse, no CAD, no nothing. Requires hard reboot. It happens for files from different sources, my HV-30, my cell phone, and an iPhone. I am reluctant to test further because of possible corruption of the file system. The files play fine with other players, such as the one built in to Thumbs Plus, or with Nero.

System is Win7-32, plenty of RAM.

Ay ideas on how to troubleshoot? Reload CODECs? Get that new SSD I wanted and install Win7-64 on it? Hmmmm?

That SSD and Windows 64-bit looks mighty attractive to me. \:D/

But, you might want to try some Media Player repairs.

Microsoft has a couple on their website:

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/video_freezes_or_crashes/

Here's another:

If you want to try reinstalling Media Player:

The second Microsoft link looked most likely and in fact did fix the problem. It indicated problems with one of the ATI Control Panel CODECs, and also with FFDSHOW. I guess I downloaded FFDSHOW a long time ago, but never have used it, at least not recently.

So, all is well so far. Thanks Bob!!!!!
