DVD failures

Postby GerryB » Sat Oct 06, 2007 1:34 pm

I have experienced a number of failures today with some blank DVDs! At first I thought it might be the software clash between PE3 and Roxio but after a little experiementation I'm convinced it is the blanks that are at fault. I have three PCs (2 x desktops and a laptop) and I can use PE3 on all of them at differnet times, I only have two hands! All three machines reject the blanks but I can write to a -RW disc on both the desktops, both from PE3 and Roxio. I didn't bother testing the laptop - 2 out of 3 is good enough for now.
When I was trying to write the DVD folder to the blanks I even set the write speed at 1x but they were rejected at the point where the allocation table was being written or disc closed - right at the end of the 'burn'.
Question is: how do I test the blanks to see if they are faulty? Is there a utility out there that I can use? When I do a properties check on the disc in the drive it shows that they have a capacity of 4.3GB but the wrapper in the spindle shows 4.7GB. I thought that blanks were al 4.7GB and the ones in question are Imation. This also may because some data was written to the blank before rejection.
I'm looking forward to some pointers.
Off to watch NZ take lumps out of FR on 'telly.
Many thanks,
Gerry

It could be the DVD's are bad. We have a thread about dvd's here:
viewtopic.php?f=23&t=273[*]

Also do your burning at 4x. It does make a big difference.

There is a certain amount of data that needs to be put on the disc and takes some of the 4.7gb.
You actually end up with around 4.25gb of space you can use.

The best thing you can do is buy good, reliable media ;)
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Second that advice about media. I use Verbatim DVDs, mainly -R but also +R DL and -RW.

No failures of any kind to date, unlike New Zealnd, the odds on favourites to win the Rugby World Cup but beaten by France - so commiserations. :( A fine France win so two northern hemisphere teams in the semi finals. :-D =D> :-D =D>

My forecast for the other two semi-finalists - Argentina to beat Scotland; South Africa to beat Fiji. :-D

Well, you could have knocked me down with a feather, AU & NZ going home and SA got a real fright from Fiji ........
Eng turned on the magic, must be something in the water out there!!!
At least IRL are in good company now!
Steve, you have been silent on Italy's performance ......
If you are confused about what I'm whittering on about take a trip to ... http://www.rugbyworldcup.com

Thank you all for the pointers on the best media. I will let you know how I get on later once I have found 'the right stuff'.

Steve,
Not only do they play rugby in Italy but they are ranked 11 in the world! The table at http://www.irb.com/rankings/full.html will be updated soon to take account of this weekends results.
I should think that Argentina is waking up to a big headache this morning!
Three games left and they should be crackers, bone shaking, thunderous!!

Drifting off the topic of DVD failures I know (sorry) but Gerry, the semi finals are England v France, South Africa v Argentina. My prediction, final France v South Africa, SA to win; play offs England to win over Argentina (but I have definately been wrong more often that I have been right!).

John, I can keep a teneous link to the DVD failures as I video rugby referees and ..... so, like Steve's meat balls and the beer brewing, we can put a foot in touch every now and then.
I'm not convinced that Ag can be stopped now and Fr will pull it out of the bag, just as they did in the footie WC a few years ago. If they don't then they are being sent to join the French Foreign Legion.

Going way off topic now... rugby is just hockey without sticks and blades. And since George Carlin so eloquently put it "It's not a sport unless there's a serious risk of injury or death" all I have to say is... T-G-I-H-S!!! (Thank Gretzky It's Hockey Season!!!) :violent1:
