iMac i7 or mac pro

Postby Svein Berger » Tue Oct 05, 2010 1:59 pm

Hi all Mac users,

What shall I choose? :pull:
I do have a nice 24" monitor, not apple, but I asume it will work nice.

I know that an iMac is not possible to expand, exept from memory.
The Mac Pro is easy to add memory, disks, video card etc.

If/when the monitor on the iMac dies, then what?

There is a DVI port on iMacs, Svein. It's designed so that you can use a dual-monitor system. But I suppose, in the unlikely case your monitor goes, you might be able to use it as an output to another monitor.

Though, in my experience, today's LCDs will certainly outlast the technology inside the computer itself. In fact, in my experience with Macs, it's the hard drives that are their real soft spots. But, if they go, Apple can replace them.

I did not think about that. My monitor is an DVI monitor, and replace a disk, as you mention, is not the biggest probem.

So do you think the iMac is more than powerful enough?

I guess it depends on what you're editing.

My 2.8 ghz dual-core iMac has plenty of power for the miniDV I work with. But I'm not sure how well it would work with an AVCHD project.

On the other hand, the newer, upper-end iMacs are using i3, i5 and even i7 processors, so they could well handle it. Although at that point you're in for over $2,000.

Which is still much cheaper than a Mac Pro -- but it is some serious money.
