Reading avi files on the iMac

Postby Clayton » Wed Jun 08, 2016 10:40 am

I recently bought a 27" iMac and so far I am liking it. I am slowly learning how to use and recently came across a problem. All my video clips are .avi files and when I went to look at them on the mac, it wouldn't open them. I had to download a program called vic 2.2.3 to convert. It converts each clip to a .mov file and then will read it. Am I going to have to convert all my clips to .mov to read or is there something I am missing. Like I say, I am still on a learning curve with the iMac. Help appreciated.

You might try Elmedia Player. I have no personal experience with it, but it's compatible with 10.7 or later.

Now as far as editing, you might have to convert them.

The biggest challenge in working with AVIs on any computer is that AVI is just an envelope for your file. What matters is the codec that composes the AVI -- and that can be any thousands of possible codecs.

Open the AVI in the free download Media Info and it should give you a report on the file, including the file's codec. If it's a DV-AVI, like the kind produced when video is captured from a miniDV camcorder, then it's not that hard to deal with. A number of Mac-based editors (like Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements) will edit DV-AVIs on a Mac. But if it's another AVI type (say a Divx AVI) then it's more of a challenge to edit.

But programs like VLC Media Player (another free download) should be able to play nearly all video formats on Macs and PCs.
