Young Lady's Twenty First Birthday

Postby John 'twosheds' McDonald » Mon Jul 30, 2007 6:18 am

OK you folks out there. Some brilliant suggestions here for various themes so I know that you'll be able to help me out.

This particular theme is a young lady's 21st birthday. I am putting a 'growing up' slideshow together for her parents. What better group of people to ask for suggestions about music?

As an aside, the topics posted under this Music heading make really useful reference point (well I think so anyway). So if someone wants to start a topic for young men's twenty first birthday music.......

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

John

It may be a cliche, but "Turn Around", by Malvina Reynolds, Harry Belafonte and Alan Greene always brings down the house.

Kenny Loggins does a very nice version, though Belafonte's original is also wonderful.

For an upbeat song I would go with "Girl on a Wire" by Swan Dive. As for introspective and Loggins and Messina I would go with "Watching the River Run"

Thanks Doreen, Beth, Ed and Steve for these tips.

Most of these (well, in truth, all of these) I haven't heard of. Looking at my music collection at home I stopped buying records in the Pink Floyd/Captain Beefheart/Frank Zappa era.

Looks like I'm going to be listening to samples for an hour or two before downloading the ones that I like.

Thanks again.

Well the slideshow was finally completed. I printed a list of all of your music suggestions and handed the task over to Mrs Twosheds. After a few hours searching the internet she came up with some other tracks and we made the final selection together.

I took the completed DVD - about seven and a half minutes - around to show the result to the young lady's mother. Took all of about 30 seconds before the tears were in full flow. The young lady's father is a tough farmer - I think he lasted about the same length of time before the sniffing and snuffling started.

Thanks all for your help in suggesting music tracks. I have posted the result in the gallery. Hope you like it.

(The tracks are Tim McGraw - My Little Girl; Natasha Beddingfield - Unwritten; Shania Twain - Man I Feel Like a Woman)

It's just "me" but I think I would have speeded up the slide changes by between 20 to 25% overall, especially those with no movement. Slightly varying the time slides are displayed for keeps viewers attention keener in my opinion. Also I think half of the no movement slides might have benefited from a very gentle left or right movement or even a tiny, tiny touch of a zoom. But that's just me..

I thought about speeding things up. But I had two problems - the first being a limited number of pictures made avaialble to me.

Each picture is on screen for about four seconds purely to try to keep in time with the music. I did try various other speeds but then (to keep in time with the music) some pictures flashed up whilst others seemed to linger for ever. So the timing was very much a compromise.

On the subject of more movement, again I was working with what was available and some of the pictures just weren't of high enough quality to use in that way - either the physical picture was too small, or the image did not fill the paper so the scan was only a fraction of the available picture size etc.

But enough of my excuses. The end result is that the lady's parents think it is terrific (their daughter hasn't seen it yet).
