Dave that was kinda where I was trying to get to. Why are there sharps and flats at all? Why are most notes on the piano keyboard a semitone apart, but b-c and e-f a whole step? Why have only 12 semitones in an octave - why not 14 with all sharps and flats? Why does a major chord in our music system have a 1-4-7 configuration - why does that sound good to us? Or 1-3-7 make a minor chord?
And of course you are correct in pointing out that other music system sound completely different.
